My 05 civic engine is noisy. Ive adjusted valves nothing is wrong. I guess its just the solid valvetrain a few honda guys say there car makes the same noise and it gets louder as the engine warms up. So my question is what oil could I use to reduce noise. I dont mind going thicker. It Is running 5w20 but I hate the thought of oil that thin. What should I use? Thanks guys its non vtec as well.

Hmmm my Civic has the same non-vtec engine, and someone actually commented how quiet it idles a couple weeks ago. Castrol GTX is a little thicker, you could try that 5w-20 flavor.

Those are some of the quieter oils I've ran in several vehicles. Right now I have the Defy in my 02 Accord. Runs nice on it.

what was the valve lash on the intake and ex b4 and after? 2 mil too loose and this type engine will be noisy. Is this an SOHC VETC design with VTEC on the intake only? Or one that activate /deactivate 1 intake valve per cyl setup at X rpm ? I run Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w20 with the 57356 wix with 1/2 qt RT5 10w30 hdeo for a add "booster" No Single of-the-shelf oil has been quieter than some lucky blends we tried** This is the lucky strike blend for 2013
** have not tried maxlife. Im not an NaXx adds package guy, I suppose ...

I've never found the oil's viscosity to make much difference to engine noise that due to a mechanical issue.
That said, try any cheap 5w30 at your next OCI to satisfy your curiosity as to whether makes a noticeable difference.

Also what oils have boron in them ill give it a try. Why are these engines loud? I've heard they are but why?

I was also concerned about 20 grade oils however today's engines aren't dissolving with them,in fact its just the opposite.
easiest to find high Boron content oil is Quaker State in the green bottle. I believe the Quaker State Ultimate Durability has a shot of Boron as well, just not as much as the green bottle
PP and Purlator Synthetic filter has quieted down our V. Next change I may try Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w20 with the same filter. It's interesting the V hast lost two mpg since going with the current combo.
Any oil produced by Conoco-Phillips will have a high boron content. If you can find the Trop-Arctic 5W-20, it's usually the best priced and it's also a syn blend.
Kendall GT is another one from C-P with high boron, and it also has titanium which I've noticed in some recent thread comments might also help quiet valvetrain noise.
The best available choice would likely be the Motorcraft 5W-20 from WalMart. Always in stock and cheap in the 5 quarts jugs.

My engines have remained very quite for 35 years using Mobil 1 oils.

All generations of Honda 4 cylinders (D, B, F, H, K, L, R) have always done two things consistently IME:
-clackety valvetrain, even w/clearances set to spec
-piston slap
ALWAYS.
Luckily, neither of these things will stop them from performing or accumulating high miles. They're just aesthetic issues to me. If you want to try and quell the noise, why not try oils with different HTHS values to chart out a possible correlation.
