Actually if you do have a small exhaust leak it will be noisier under load so I'm wondering if that is what you are hearing . Not unusual for a very small leak at a manifold or pipe to manifold to make what sounds like a ticking noise from the pulses of the exhaust , many times it is mistaken for a mechanical noise .

Well it don't sound like an exhaust leak I've ever heard. More of a slight "knock". If you've ever heard say an old Triumph Spitefire or better yet more like the old (say 2000) Kia Sportage SUV.....noisy engine like that...hated the way the "knocked"
Is it similar to the noise in my RAV4?
Someone on youtube told me it could be exhaust noise, but I was not able to test for that. The problem is the noise happens only on cold engine under load. Does yours sound similar?

Different engines (even the same model in the same body) will react differently to different oils...still...

For me, Pennzoil Ultra is one of the quietest oils I've used.
Try a 10w30. I really can't say why but in my chev 10w30 reduced piston slap and all running noises compared to 5w30. Pennzoil Conventional is my brand in that truck and for summertime it was great. Once winter hit I went with a 0w30 and just tolerated the extra noise.
Next winter it will get Mobil 1 0w-40 since its just the best oil out there anyways.
Consider my advice as valuable as what you paid for it

Mobil Super 5000 and Super HM have been the best oils for quieting engines that I have used. I also had great results with Peak 10w30 conventional and Valvoline conventional.

I've tried many different oils to help (although she can't hear anything!) and Motorcraft 5W30 semi-syn made the most difference. Problem is that WalMart doesn't carry the 5 quart jug, so it can be as expensive as going with a Full Synthetic in the big jug.

My old Mustang was pretty noisy. I tried a lot of different oils in it. Quaker State Ultimate Durability ended up being the best to quiet it down. That's one reason Im running it now.

Typewriter would be a fair statement for someone that "pecks" the keys lol. So Boron is an antiwear that will make an engine quite? Everyone say Pennzoil conventional does, but it isn't that high in Boron. Quaker State Conventional has much more. I don't think that will do the trick. I have tried Shell Formula 5w30 Full Synthetic. It has 245ppm of boron. That is more than Quaker State Conventional and the Shell Syn. is louder than Pennzoil conventional. So maybe boron isn't the key. Moly has done best so far. I haven't tried a thicker vis than a 5w30 (the engine calls for a 5w20)I've been tempted to try thicker and high zinc like Quaker State 5w30 HM Defy. Either that or go all out to a 5w40/0W40 syn. But they cost much more....funny that this "knock rocket" uses zero oil on a 6k oil change. But I have a Chrysler 4.0 v-6 van that is very quite but uses 1/2 qt. at 3500 miles....go figure.

Very interesting that I've now found 3 high mileage oils that meets SN rating and also gets the energy conserving stamp. Castrol High Mileage 5w30, Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 and Mobil Super HM 5w30 (Not Mobil 1 High Mileage). I didn't check 5w20 or 10w30 oils. Hard to believe the Castrol gets it with a vis of 11.99 @ 100C, cSt

Since you're not consuming oil, I would just stay with the same grade and not use HM. If the high Moly Pennzoil Conventional you have in it now isn't quieting it down for you, you may want to go with Mobil Super 5000 with the titanium additive next OCI. If that doesn't work, go with Valvoline conventional with the sodium additive and possibly organic friction modifier. Just a thought.

Since you're not consuming oil, I would just stay with the same grade and not use HM. If the high Moly Pennzoil Conventional you have in it now isn't quieting it down for you, you may want to go with Mobil Super 5000 with the titanium additive next OCI. If that doesn't work, go with Valvoline conventional with the sodium additive and possibly organic friction modifier. Just a thought.
