Seeking opinions on the best oil (not necessarily European) for this application below $9 per qt/ltr (i.e. reasonably priced) and above $9 per qt/ltr (i.e. price does not matter). I'm in NYC, so the $9 is just an arbitrary threshold reflecting prices in this area. Feel free to use your own definition of what is and isn't the "expensive stuff" based on your experience.

The expensive and one of the best is Amsoil. Just look up on their website for your vehicle and what they recommend. You can probably find other oils almost as good, but none better. You order online and its at your house in 2 or 3 days.

Mobil 1 or PP/PU at Walymart are close and cheaper and easier to get.

As far as off-the-shelf (aka under $9/L), M1 0w40 is a solid buy. Another alternative, if it's on sale (keeping it under $9/L), is Royal Purple 5w40 or 0w40.

My S4's 4.2L V8 showed good results on Motul 300V 5w30, which is about $13-15/L.

You can spend a small fortune on Motul, RP, Redline or amsoil, but you cannot beat the price/performance of good ole' M1 0w40

Expensive car requires expensive maintenance.

VW 502/505 oil (A3/B4) , 10k intervals.

The car racks up minimal mileage a year (~4k). I've been changing the oil approx. annually regardless of the mileage put on it. Is there a big downside to extending the OCI beyond a year (lets say up to 2 yrs) since the usage is so low?

With that little usage and the oil sitting for that long, you'll get a lot of acids and such building up in the crankcase. I would change it every year unless you will routinely be taking it out on the freeway for 20-30 minutes to burn off the contaminants.

Based on my own UOAs, I'd agree with the above.

Seriously? You don't want to spend $50 or so a year on oil maintaining your Audi?

Not cheap, just was wondering if it's even worth it to get something designed for extended OCI if I'm not going to be able to take advantage of it.

I personally wouldn't take that risk on this car, but it's your decision.

An oil change once a year is a fairly small maintenance cost.

Have you considered corrosion in your engine while your car is in storage? There are many posts on many forums discussiing this topic in great detail.
In general, don't store your engine with contaminated oil in the sump. Your mileage may vary, as always, of course.
Motul makes VW/Audi specific lube:
Specific 505.01 502.00 505.00 5W-40
That's what I would use if I were you.
Cheers,
=L=

If you're changing it once a year with a few spirited drives every now and then; keeping it under 4000 miles a year, I'd go with Motul 300V. Its honestly worth it since you won't be changing the oil all to often for it to make a really big dent on your wallet. After I picked up the Volvo, I did this for the P car. Its just a very stout oil. If not, Mobil 1 or PU will do you good.

What exactly are you driving anyway? I can't wait to head back to the city.

I have never seen a 5qt Walmart jug of M1 0W-40.

They do sell the quarts for $6.47, though. I'd just use that in this engine, change it once a year (given the annual mileage), and call it a day.
