One other thing I was thinking about adding a half a quart of synthetic lucas oil stabilizer. This is because the Prius engine is always cutting out and starting because it's a hybrid. I thought the Lucas would help the oil cling to the metal during engine stops. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance. Yay, my first post here!

Mine likes Valvoline anything and Mobil 1. Mine is the same Gen only 1 year newer.

Just did the first oil change on our new 2013 Toyota Prius after 6 months/3900 miles. Used Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 and Purolator filter Toyota Care will do an 0W-20 chage every 10k per the service schedule up to 30K, but cannot let any one of my cars go an entire year without an oil change (Sacrilege! How else can I get some quiet weekend time away from the wife and kids?) Anyway, I have no problem using any approved 0W-20 grade for the life of the car and find nothing "questionable" about that specific grade. (Others are free to disagree)

TIG---do you have any friends who do not use M-1, or are they not considered friends if they do not use it?

No to Lucas. I would run Mobil 1 EP 5w30 and nothing else. If you can get Amsoil that would be even better in the signature series but i do like extended OCI's. Put alot of miles on my cars and don't want to be under the car every month especially when it's colder out.

My one son has a new Jeep and has the dealer change his oil with PP, as that's the only brand they carry. My sister has WM change hers with VWB but here husband uses M1 EP in his truck. My daughter has 2 MB, 1 Infinity. Here husband drives a GMC and Ford F350 and has a 69 Chev Camaro and a GMC conversion van and 38FT Sea Ray with twin 500Cu in marine purpose engines. All have M1 oils for lub. Several friends do use M1 oils as they see the outstanding results I have had with their oils for the past 35 years. It's hard to argue with success.

And they're cut out of the will.

Not out of the will, but don't park that thing in my drive way.

You should run 5w-30. The engines in the Generation II Prius have been known to begin consuming oil at high mileage and this could be exacerbated or brought on earlier by running oil that is too thin. I ran 0w-20 in mine once and saw a minimal difference in fuel economy.

As far as which 5w-30, it doesn't matter too much. The Prius is very easy on oil and you can safely run almost any 5w-30 to 7500 miles, and most synthetics can be run much farther than that.

That was inspired.
ROFL!

Yeah, I've heard that they start using oil after so many number of miles. That's why for extra protection I was going to go with the M0S2, or even Ceratec by the same makers. I wonder if there is some way to postpone the oil consumption in this engine other than top quality synthetics? what is it about this motor that it would start using oil? Possibly the fact that it is continually starting and stopping? I'm not knocking it, I've heard they can go many miles. Maybe regular dino oil is better? I'd like to start asking the taxi drivers up here, as apparently they put on mega miles on their Prii. I'll start asking them what they use for oil....

So many people told not to use silly additives, yet you're coming back with new (silly) ideas. Just buy some 5W30 Mobil 1 and call it a day. Have you changed transaxle oil? How about engine/inverter coolant? Are you taking care of the battery? Engine is the last thing that will fail on the car (or most any car).

Consider a 0w-30. I've been happy with M1 0w-30 in my truck, my Camaro, and our '09 Prius. I use the M1 0w-20 in my '12 Prius C.

It's good for me.

Hi dino. The truth is that the gen2 Prius engine has pretty good longevity, and if some have minor oil consumption like about 1qt or less per 5000 miles, it's pretty much a non issue. Seriously, just be sure to keep it topped off if it uses a little oil and it will probably outlast the rest of the car.

Whether it's something to do with the Atkinson cycle and taking some oil through the intake I don't know. But I know that quite a few Prius owners report some kind of minor oil consumption at around 100k miles or so. Personally I'm at 110k miles on mine and it uses about 1/2 qt every 5000 miles. Like I said, it just isn't an issue to me. The engine runs totally smooth and I get 55 MPG. And any increase in consumption is so gradual that I cant even detect it.

BTW. I've used various oils and it's run great on all of them. Recently I've use Valvoline Durablend 5W30 and Castrol Edge 5W30 with 7500 to 10000 mile OCI's.
