Possibly the fact that it is continually starting and stopping? I'm not knocking it, I've heard they can go many miles. Maybe regular dino oil is better? I'd like to start asking the taxi drivers up here, as apparently they put on mega miles on their Prii. I'll start asking them what they use for oil....
Hi dino. The truth is that the gen2 Prius engine has pretty good longevity, and if some have minor oil consumption like about 1qt or less per 5000 miles, it's pretty much a non issue. Seriously, just be sure to keep it topped off if it uses a little oil and it will probably outlast the rest of the car.
Whether it's something to do with the Atkinson cycle and taking some oil through the intake I don't know. But I know that quite a few Prius owners report some kind of minor oil consumption at around 100k miles or so. Personally I'm at 110k miles on mine and it uses about 1/2 qt every 5000 miles. Like I said, it just isn't an issue to me. The engine runs totally smooth and I get 55 MPG. And any increase in consumption is so gradual that I cant even detect it.
BTW. I've used various oils and it's run great on all of them. Recently I've use Valvoline Durablend 5W30 and Castrol Edge 5W30 with 7500 to 10000 mile OCI's.
