Hello everyone new member here looking for the best oil for my Lexus GS300. I swapped the motor for a 2JZGTE and converted it to single turbo and is currently making 400whp. I drive this car very hard and daily drive it and also put about 30,000 miles a year on it. It will be pushing around 500whp here soon so I want to put in a really good oil to protect the engine as best as I could. Any help would be appreciated. -Chris

Would Redline 15w50 be ok? Or is it too thick?

You will need an oil temp/pressure gauge and some UOA's to dial in exactly what oil and weight you need to run.

Ok I will order up some gauges. What oil should I start with?

There are a lot of oils to pick from, obviously price is a factor... and since this was a spendy build that you put a lot of pride and wrench hours into you are likely going to say price doesn't matter.

Have you asked your tuner or engine builder what weight they would run?

The motor is stock internally except for a head gasket and head studs that I just did so I don't have an engine builder to ask. My tuner said 15w50 would be good but I would like another opinion. Is Mobil 1 15w50 good? I ask because its highly available.

I was reading that redline 15w50 is a really good oil but that it could be too thick. Thoughts?

Thank you for the help so far I really appreciate it.

I purposely avoided suggesting any specific brand or grade, as there are many options out there, and it also depends on your budget and length of your OCI etc.

Few oils I can think off:
- Oil recommended by your tuner
- Delvac 1 ESP 5W40
- Reline 5W40 & 10W40
- RLI 10W40
- Schaeffer's 5W50
- Amsoil 10W40

These oils can definitely withstand extreme high temperatures with a doubt, and still can be used for street use.

I've never heard of GC 5w-40. Now I did see 0w-40 Belgian castrol at Walmart the other day and its their newest offering.
Or they do make a castrol edge or syn tec or something in a 5w-40 but its not made in Germany.
OP. any euro spec oil for your car is awesome. Try the thinnest one in its grade.

If you're going to stay in SoCal and won't see cold temperatures, Red Line 10w-40 is where I would start. It will be less prone to shearing from the turbo than a 0w or 5w. An oil pressure gauge and UOA would do you well also.

If you'd like to experiment down the road, you can compare the Red Line UOA to Rotella T6, which will be much more readily available and cheaper.

I wouldn't resort to using 15w50 unless I was having an oil pressure issue, with a stock bottom end you shouldn't need more than a 40wt oil with the extra boost.

I would splurge for the Redline 10w30/40

Although going with a boutique oil would be nice, if I were considering an oil for any vehicle, local availability at a brick and mortar store would be a huge deciding factor for me. Then price, and some sort of compromise between price and performance for the length of oil change interval I'd run. There's just something satisfying about being able to get oil that day versus having to wait in the mail if ordering online or whatnot.

In your case, I'd agree with what others have said, any of the now readily available xW-40 'euro' synthetic oils would suit your needs or even the less expensive but still well-performing HDEO (however, I'd be more inclined to go with a 0W-40 or 5W-40 versus a 15W-40 for [cold-startup] flow), this of course somewhat contingent on a Used Oil Analysis and as others have said, how it holds up to daily use with oil pressure and temperature being monitored.
