I have a '98 Tacoma 4x4 3.4l manual. I'm currently running Redline MT-90 in the transmission and transfer case. It's parked outside and started at the 5am the coldest part of the night here. Commute is short trip of stop and go. 1st to 2nd and back to 1st are a pretty hard. Any MTF's that might provide better cold shifting? Thanks in advance!

Red Line manual transmission oil is good stuff. Use with confidence.

I ran 10w30 motor oil in my Honda 5-speed transmission as recommended by the manual and the dealer. I used Mobil 1 and changed it every 30K miles. At 200K the bearings were getting very noisy and so I replaced the bearings and seals but I also switched to Red Line MTF. Now at 430K the bearings are as quiet as new and the transmission still shifts like new. I change the Red Line every 60K miles.

I used the Amsoil manual transmission fluid in a similar transmission and never had any cold shifting issues. I live in the mountains of Calif, so it gets pretty cold sometimes.

i've got a 1st gen taco (2000), with a w59 5 speed transmission. The best one I've found so far is the Redline MT-90. Shifts smoothly even in sub-zero weather.

I have been using Pennzoil Syncro MTL for years. Never had a problem in cold weather, even if it gets to -15c

I suggest you shift to Redline MT-85 which is a 75W85 for those short trips where the transmission oil doesn't warm up.

California too cold?
Simply add this to your current fill of MT fluid:

Or try another fluid:
Redline MT90 visc 100/40F
15.6/90 cst

Amsoil MTG visc
13.9/87.6

Ford XT-M5-QS
15.4/76

GM 12346190
12/75 (labelled 75w90 but actually a 75w85)

I'd give the Amsoil MTG a run. Between the two brands, I usually find that one works great when the other doesn't, even in identical transmission families.

If you're not happy with either Amsoil or Redline, then give the Ford 75w90 or thin GM 75w90 a try.
