By far, my favorite thing about my Focus is how incredible the handling is. For a cheap little car, you never really expect much of anything in the 'WOW' department, but the Focus really does deliver. Where I live there are plenty of twisty, tight, windy bits of road that I can throw the car around in. The steering is point-and-shoot, no tire squeal, no body roll, just fantastic cornering and a great driving feel. I remember when the first generation Focus came out that all the car magazines raved about how the Focus handled, even Top Gear liked it. And I have to say, I agree with all of them. I also like little aspects too, like how the steering wheel is small, so making quick turns and maneuvers just feels fast. And the engine makes a good noise when I step on it, unlike many other cheap cars that sound like sewing machines.

So I got to thinking, what is the best fun/best handling compact car ever? Here are the criterion: 1) It has to be a small car - since the term 'compact' is vague and changes over the years, I won't be too picky. Just think small. 2) It cannot be a special or performance edition of said car, so no SVT Focus, SRT-4 Neon (great car though, BTW), GTI Golf, etc... You get the picture. It pretty much has to be the standard model of whatever car you are debating. There are some exceptions, like for example the 05-07 Focus ST, which was basically the base model Focus with a slightly bigger engine. Everything else mechanical about the car was the same. I'm sure there are other exceptions like that as well. But no purpose-built performance models allowed like the ones listed above.

Handling isn't the only aspect, but think too of cars that were just a blast to drive, made a great noise, etc.

That's what I hear. My dad had a '95 Neon 'Sport' I think it was called, but he sold it before I could ever drive. The only Neon I've driven was my late SRT-4, which for the sake of this discussion cannot be considered. It was an animal with a coilover suspension setup though!

A Maxima is considered a compact car?

My wifes Mazda 3 2.0 auto, which is basically a Focus, is a terrrific handling econobox. Not much acceleration out of a turn but can get thru turns better than most. You can manually shift the auto which really helps.

define econobox, is Mini Cooper one? what about Integra? or Golf? or Miata?

From the strict definition I guess it means the lowest cost to 2nd lowest cost model line of the make, FWD, small engine. I'd say CRX has the title due to the double wishbone and light weight. Mazda Portege was pretty good too.

No, it is considered a mid-size.

However, living with my friend and her supersized friends (larger persons, tall, girth, 500lbs, 600lbs, etc) has shown me how even an "Compact Executive" class car, such as my/our V70 XC, can be downright SMALL, in select situations. (As to passenger room, sometimes.)

It really does make you wish that they didn't put the gearshifter where they do sometimes.

However, 80% of the time, it is pretty well.... Except when 5ft11 585-600lbs lady comes.. or 6ft1 650lbs lady.. (two extreme examples, yes, but just to show you how the Volvo can be cramped, if they even elect to try to get in at all.)

If I recall correctly, Car and Driver posted a lane change number in a Honda Fit that was just about the same as a Ferrari. It may have been the first generation Fit that was here, but can't imagine the latest is too far off.

1100 pounds in the front row would be nuts. My car which is my fav econobox would be maxed out with that kinda weight.
