AVG? Just use the Windows Defender? Is that even turned on by default anymore? If I have MSE do I use it? Something else?

Had mixed luck with AVG, and Avira is OK but is weird since it is not from here. I have moved on from Lavasoft, only used them to fix infected computers.

Suggestions as to free antimalware/antivirus?

Should I just get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and fuhgeddaboutit?

I subscribe to CU. In their most recent test, Avast came out on top. If your worried about security, you should run OpenSuse Linux. It's very easy to download and install it. Set up a small partition for it and use it only when you wanna do online banking or other critical web things. Phishing is a big problem people overlook.

I have no AV software and only use Windows Defender. With Acronis True Image and my back up routine to keep all relevant files on external drive a full system reload is often faster that virus scan, but unlike a virus scan the recovery is 100% effective.

Over the years I also learned how to be smart about browsing the web. Most of my viruses or malware were caught on torrent web sites or the sites with those funny/stupid vids of people doing crazy stuff (college humor or soemthing similar), where one vid leads to another and before you know it a virus scan pops out.
I learned to mostly avoid those sites now, but also to use Chrome alongside Internet Explorer and Firefox. I like IE and use it most of the time, but in the odd event when I go to torrent sites or something I'm not sure about, I use Chrome or FF.
It's working well so far and I don't really remember the last time I had to deal with malware or a trojan horse.

I use avast! Home edition on all my windows PCs. That and Malwarebytes and SpyBot to get rid of malware/adware

I'm not so high on MalwareBytes any longer. The latest infection that hit a couple PC's I support was not found by MWB at all a few weeks ago.

It took a combination of SuperAntispyware, E-Set online scanner, and Vipre to clean the PCs in question. MWB found next to 0, it's been my go-to-sweeping-tool for years. No longer. All 4 of these are needed to truly cleanse a PC, at least for the Yontoo sypware I had the joy of cleaning recently.
