I know this is a loaded question but I would like to hear what yall think.

What would be the best conventional 5w30 or 10w30 oil? Vehicle 2000 Isuzu Trooper 3.5 liter, 67k. Mostly short trips. 3k oil changes with Napa filters. Looking for an oil that has excellent AW and barrier additives plus detergents. Looking to prevent wear and not get a nasty motor. I know that a Syn would be better but with the short trips it would probably be a waste.

Well, the picture is really changing. I would consider any of the GF-4 oils. In particular Conoco oils and Mobil DriveClean oils theoretically have a Group III synthetic base.

I agree with Al; any of the GF-4 oils are very good choices.I am using Motorcraft 5W30 synthetic blend, which is a GF-4 oil.I get it at Wal-Mart for $1.42 a quart!

This will give me something to do tomorrow.

One of the lubricants for your engine of really good results would be Schaeffers 5w30 7000,I belive there is a source for this outstanding product on this website,,I would also recomend useing a Baldwin filter,,,changing every 5,000 or so,,or three times a year you would get very good protection....BL

I have the GF-4 Mobil DC 5w30 in my Nissan 4x4 v-6 and I thought it would be a match made in heaven. The engine is noisier than before and makes sounds that I have not ever heard from it. I ran the 10w30 Syntec blend in in all summer and fall and the motor really liked it (judging by the sound anyhow). I may go for the MC next as this oil intrigues me to no end. By the way, what is the consensus on how the DC GF-4 compares to the Grp II/ GRP III blends such as the Syntec Blend?

All the ones I've seen lately say blend on the label.
Top conventional oils IMO are Chevron, Havoline, Pennzoil, and if you want to spend a little more, Valvoline MaxLife.

My favorite 5w30 and 10w30 conventionals are Chevron (or Havoline) and Motorcraft. This is based upon good performance, quality base oils and good addatives at a bargain price.

ncirish- My personal experience with my oil experimentsin my 1999 Rodeo 3.2 has been very costly yet fun. I tried numerous brands and viscosities and can tell you that the BEST oil and grade was Valvoline Durablend 10W30. My MPG increased drastically and my Isuzu loves this stuff. Very quiet valvetrain and no consumption. It has never run better or smoother. Good Luck.

I am with Mike on this one Havoline provides the most protection at its price range.I have been kind to Mobil DC clean in the past,i didnt come out and say it was junk i will let others like Ncirish prove it.I still dont believe its is group 3 base stock although many on this site do ,what did PT BARNUM say yeah he was right. By the way the Castrol Syntec blend has a higher flash point and a higher HTHS than The Mobil Drive Clean.

Expert, can you tell me why the DC is "junk" in your opinion? I am NOT pleased at all with it, but was wondering what you thought.

Motorbike you already know, and no matter i say you will disagree with me.Ncirish do a search on Drive Clean and see the post by John Browning and others who have very high oil consumtion using this product. This product had the most volatility of any 5w30 and 10w30 i tested.

Take a look at Chevron or Havoline both good all around conventional oils. Both do well in used oil analysis.

As far as Group III being synthetic I take Japan and Europe side on this in that. Group III are not considered synthetic. Only API considers Group III a synthetic. Synthetic blend when the synthetic part is Group III is all about marketing.

This topic is suddenly of interest to me since you guys talked me out of trying synthetic in my 175k mile Previa.

I am in Canada so I may not be able to get all the oils that are avail in the US. I was going to get good 'ol Pennzoil 5w30 unless there is a better option? The Maxlife and Quaker Higher Mileage look good too but their pour points aren't as low as the old Pennzoil 5w30 and I need an oil for -35C mornings!

Don't know the whole story. But at -35c I would not use anything but a true synthetic. Cold temperature oil flow is an area where true synthetics Groups IV/V come into their own league. A 0w30 synthetic for Winter would be best at that temperature.
