Hello, after a bucket-load of reading in this section I am still unsure of which Castrol product to use in my Nissan Patrol 4wd.

The manual states gl-4 for transmission and gl-5 for the two diffs although the rear is LSD.
We are not spoiled for choice down here so unless the oil is from a global petroleum company it can be very hard to find and overtly expensive to buy because of freight etc .

I decided on Castrol because I can find their products. I like the idea of their boron additive oil and also the Dello and also their synthetics, they have so many different choices!!!

Put simply there must be a standout oil in their range for each part I want to fill.

The manual asks for 75-90 for manual, 140 for LSD and no recommendation on the front diff. I am totally flexible in the face of expert opinion or any opinion actually(getting frustrated).

So please can someone hand me the best recipe from this company, within reason money is no object this time around.

cheers and thanks for any help.

Any standard Castrol made 75W-90 GL5 will work fine in the front diff. If the LSD in the rear requires a 75W-140 then use it.

The transmission might be a problem. The GL4 rating is to keep the brass parts inside from corroding and causing problems. Most GL5 gear oils will eat the brass parts in the transmission. My Jeep's AX-5 trans is the same way requiring a 75W-90 GL3/4 gear oil. I could not find any to meet the standard except Redline MT-90, Amsoil makes one, and maybe Royal Purple. I use Redline's MT90 and it works great. HTH

BTW I have relatives in Sidney!

Thanks Ryan, this gear lube caper is hard to nail down.
It was easy with help from the good fellows of this site to feel confident I was doing the best by my diesel engine with Devlac1 but finding a comparable product(now in gearbox/diff terms) is a bear!
I will see if redline is easily sourced over here.

Sydney eh! thats no big deal almost everybody down here has a relative in Sydney also!

Chevron Delo ESI gear and trans oil is fine for use in transmissions and is a GL 4/5 oil. For a mineral oil it is very good, probably one of the best none synthetics gear oils. At work we run ESI in the diffs on 1400 buses and have had excellent results. I have also run this in the M21 4sp and dana 18 transfer case in my jeep with great results (besides, jeeps leaks too much for syn). Look here for Delo infohttp://www.chevrontexacodelo.com/en/products/transmissionfluidgearoil/default.asp#trans

Havne't had much experience with Castrol gear lube, but it has work fine the few times I've used it. The performance specs on the Delo are quite good for the price. At least for the price in the PNW, Australia might be quite differant.

Castrol SAF-XA used to work very well in the rear diff.
It has recently been re-formulated from a 75W-140 to an 80W-140 with specific friction modifier to suit the LSD used in the rear end of high performance Holdens and Fords.
It used to state a specific recommendation for Patrol diffs, these days it just has a general "suitable for 4WD diffs...."

I've still got the old formulation in our rear end.

Thanks Wreckerman, I will look into the delo for the transmission, my manual states the box is gl-4 and my aftermarket manual says it is a GL-4/5?? If it ends up really being a 4 I will go with your Delo recommendation,it reads good even to me. cheers.

Thanks again Rick that is what Castrol advised me to run also (after I leaned on him some)will chase some of that down. He said it is what the V8 supercars run in their rear.
cheers
