That stated, what do you think the best product for my VW would be?

I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles as well. To help preserve my 1989 jalopy, which I'm restoring, I've ordered two of the microGreen filters.

The microGreen is a spin-on filter with a built-in bypass. No external bypass mechanism is needed. The filter has two filtration media: one regular medium and a 2-micron medium.

The vendor claims that the microGreen will allow longer oil change intervals. Since I'm skeptical about the holding capacity of the 2-micron filter, I plan to initially keep the 3,000 mile oil change interval and analyze oil samples to determine the size of the particles remaining in the oil.

You may want to go to the microGreen website and see if there is a filter that fits your application: http://www.microgreenfilter.com/
