Most of the oils seem to do just fine. Mazda is part of the Ford Family so if you can get it cheap try Motorcraft for a while. Maybe even do a UOA and see if it performing well. If so who care what anyone says.

Heck Castrol seems to be a fine oil too you could just stick with that. I got a case of Shell for about $1.50-1.70 a quart and am doing that. It will be fine.

If you do happen to drive REAL HARD or race a bit then Synthetic would be a better choice just for that extra bit of protection and or longer drain interval potential.

im just wondering why mazda dosent recommend Syn.
they have Shell at costcojust no 5w20

Heck Ford and Dodge do not recommend Synthetic oil per se either when not the factory fill. Does it recommend against it?

Hmmm i think Penzoil Conv. would be good choice ?

Can't go wrong with the yellow bottle....for making candles that is.

You know I heard on here that one guy used it and the next morning there was wax dripping from the all of the interior vents.

It's even MORE difficult to pick a fav if you read these forums!

Do you think I live in a severe climate? I do, but it's different than yours. Here I use conventional 5w or 10w but if I lived there I'd use 0w and that means synthetic. The battery and starter will thank you next winter!

I have a Mazda, and I intend to use conventional as well. I have read here that the motorcraft oil is a top notch performer. And its very affordable as well.
The specs on it are at the motorcraft website.
just do a web search for motorcraft oil and it'll come up.
At my next oil change Motorcraft 5w20 will be going in.

Castrol gtx is my favorite flavor but I don't think you can go wrong with any major brand conventional oil. Pennzoil, valvoline, quaker state, mobil and many others are all good. Havoline is pretty well thought of here too. Goodluck....

IMO, the two top dino oils that have performed consistently well in UOAs posted here in many different vehicles would have to be Castrol GTX and Pennzoil.

I got great UOA results with GTX 5w20 in my wife's Civic.

Schaeffers 704 5-20. Albeit 20-25% pao, the dino side is 100% pure pariffin base. Throw in our additive package that noone has and you end up with an excellent 5-20. Our straight weight dinos get overlooked as well.
