Bed options?

I have a couple of herniated disks. I like a very hard bed. My wife likes a very soft bed. After 2-3 mattresses we tried one of those inflatable things where you can individually control "your side's" hardness, etc... Sleep Number something or whatever. Anyway, they are awesome. That's all I can say.

With the 3" foam, you could throw that topper over just about anything and get a good nights sleep. I can't explain the sensation, but it feels like you are floating and supported evenly, as it is designed to do.

How are those memory foam mattresses? My Sealy after 7 years is suffering from the same problem.

I don't have a completely memory foam mattress, but my Spring Air no flip mattress has a memory foam pillow top. when I first got it I didn't really like it, but my wife loved it. it took about a month for the foam to "break in" and get super comfortable; now I love it. I'd be scared of a completely foam mattress... bad memories of the cheapy foam bunk bed mattresses I had as a kid.

as far as futons... they suck. I slept on one for a couple of years due to space constraints. I'll never do that again.

We just recently had the "pleasure" of test driving mattresses. Decided to finally get a king size to hold us, the boy (on occasion), 2 cats, and the dog. We had a Sealy Posturpedic on the queen size for 5 years and it was starting to sag alittle despite frequent turnings. We did the Select Comfort 30 day trial and were fairly disappointed. The set we chose was also $4K

. They had sets that started at about a grand but weren't anything we would consider comfortable. Went to the Healthy Back Store and laid on their top line Dormia. After about a minute, decided that was the bed for us. It uses the Tempurpedic in 2 densities and has sheep's wool in the pillow top to aid in air circulation. Some complain that Tempurpedics trap body heat (thats one of the things that makes them "conform") and are just too hot. Had it for 6 months now and wouldn't consider anything else. Also, the Dormia carries a 25 year warranty versus 20 for the regular Tempurpedics, if that makes a big difference. Got the mattress and very nice foundation (series of plastic boxes linked together) for $2300, delivered and set-up. That may still seem like alot, but if you have problems with your back or sleeping comfortably, its well worth it.

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT!

The guy obviosuly rang up the wrong mattress. I got the ultra firm; I could have slept on my floor for free. I just do not get it anymore. I have not bought a product in the last 5 years where EVERYTHING went kosher. People just freakin amaze me. Now I got to deal with this **** for another week.

I had been waking up with a sore back every morning and attributed it to my age (46) and a few back injuries at work over the years. In Oct. 04' we purchased a Tempupedic (clone) mattress and
over 90% of my lower back pain is gone. My wife also says she is sleeping better than ever. One of the advantages of this type mattress is that each person stays on their own side of the bed and actually "sinks in". There is no need to spend $2000 for the original when many clones are available for under $1000 (queen size). After much research I recommend a mattress with a top layer of 3" of 5lb. viscoelastic foam. If you 'google' Memory Foam you will find many places selling clones that are just as good as the original.

I should have specified that 5lb. memory foam is considered "firm'. 4lb. is medium and 3lb. is soft. I got the 5lb. because I believe the firmer mattress is better for back pain sufferers. Another option is a mattress with 5lb. foam and a 1" or 2" top layer of softer foam so that you still get the support and yet you feel the softness of the top layer.(This is the theory behind the higher priced Tempurpedics ie: The Celebrity mattress). In an earlier post someone mentioned Dormia as an alternative and they make excellent mattresses for less money than Tempurpedic. However there are cheaper alternatives on the internet for those that don't have(or don't want to spend) the price of these name brand mattresses. I'm very happy with my clone.

We looked at tempurpedic, sealy, simmons, serta, etc., price not really an object within reason. We were looking to go from queen to king, as we both stretch out, and the cat sleeps at the foot of the bed.

We didn't like any of the tempurpedic mattresses between the two of us. We sunk in nice, but we weren't comfortable.

We found at sleepys that they offer a "customization" by knightsdowne, based upon pressure points and how you lay. Their matrrsses are a combination of foam and springs. The boxsprings have a huge number of internal springs, and all pieces are very heavy

They customize the firmness and design half and half based upon the customization. The options aren't that advanced, so they have most next day.

Amazing how much better we sleep now.

Also, we got a foam pillow, can't recall the brand, which is the best, fast recovering, supportive pillow I've found. Tempurpedic is great too, but I'll have to find the brand.

I'm verysensitive to pillow and head/neck support. Tempurpedic and the other light foampillow are the best.

I have a select comfort (sleep number bed).

Love it, no issues. Have it anyway you want it.

I had to ditch my rock hard Sealy after just a few years. I went with a local company - Denver mattress. Much better! It doesn't have the foam around the edges so it's flat across the entire sleeping surface as the mattress breaks in. With the Sealy, it was like sleeping in a taco. I also went with plush instead of firm so it has enough support without feeling like a concrete slab.

I have my doubts as to how long it's going to last. Next time, I'm going with a Select Comfort.
