it gets better.

Truck crash hauling anything can shut down the roads.
As a firefighter I have not had an electric vehicle fire or battery fire. Lots of ICE vehicle fires, Mostly gasoline vehicles with only a handful of diesel vehicles.

I’m a retired firefighter/engineer and there wasn’t electric vehicles back when I was a hose jockey. Even so, I wouldn’t dare park an EV in my garage on a charger. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, but those fires go out because of limited fuel for the fire and can also be easily put out.

It has now been over 24 hours and the road is still shut down and the fire still burns right now at this time I am posting this. They thought they had it under control in the very early morning hours until it started up again.

I've been to quite a few ICE vehicle garage fires. Hopefully once Solid state batteries are fully ready for market we can phase out lithium ion batteries for good. It would be wise to mandate Lithium Ion phase out, I don't like storing them in my home. Although I have a large Lipo4 portable power unit inside stored at 75% charge.

Not always and hazmat can take hours/days to make safe.
Had a tractor trailer burn until we could get a front end loader on site to rip into and dump the load.
The load was hay bales and just smoldered until we could rip into it.

"can be easily put out" Said no one ever who has fought vehicle fires. Magnesium wheels used to be a thing, those are a joy to extinguish.
I had one magnesium fire and luckily the company had lots of dry sand to smother it, Still had to stick around a few hours until it fully cooled though. This company was right next door to the teflon making company that was interesting whenever they had a "over pressure event" during the manufacture of teflon in a pressure vessel. Our firehouse was a 1/2 mile down the road and the over pressure event would move our overhead doors like a vehicle lightly backed into it. It wasn't really a hazard but we responded automatically when we heard it. And people there would get the "Teflon Flu" due to not wearing proper ppe.

They need to develop some kind of apparatus so that they can drag a burning EV off the road and away from other flammable things. Maybe a harpoon gun and cable. Firefighters would love to have something like that to play with, LOL.

The solid state batteries currently in use and being developed still use lithium.

Yes, the dangers are pretty crazy. There’s got to be some sort of mix that can be found to help cool and maybe even seal the batteries that were burning to help prevent thermal runaway and reflash. Kind of like AFFF the Navy uses for fuel fires, that forms a barrier between the fuel and oxygen. In this case with batteries, it would need to have a significant cooling effect and/or chemically block the transmission of ions. I’m not a battery expert though so I’m not even sure something like that’s possible.

And in the meantime, Rome burns…

There is a group from my area going out there to bring supplies to the cars that are out there with no gas or no battery charge left. The news isn't talking about the dead electric cars bricked.

Also many people tried to go through the Rasor off road area and Afton canyon..All got stuck so theres rescue's going on in that area too.
