So, something interesting I've noticed over the past few months. I've been going to a few conventions- I've been to Boston, I've been to NYC, been to NJ, and upcoming I have Baltimore and Toronto again.

I'm curious. Because we tend to go to bars afterwards before we go back to the hotel. And generally just for ease, I get a burger and fries. Now, I don't know if it's the Rum, or what, but the burgers at bars are THE BEST burgers I have ever had. Consistently. Just as an example from Boston, McGreevys Sports bar, and Bukowski Tavern, both right across the street from the convention center, had the best burgers I have EVER eaten. Is that a fluke? Is it just my imagination or do bars really have the best burgers? :|

There is an alcohol correction factor involved

The alcohol correction factor is most noticeable with Jack in the Box. If not for the ACF, no one would willingly eat those "tacos".

That being said, you can get some really good burgers at a pub. Many years ago we had a battle royale over the burgers around various UTA bars. I'm still going with J Gilligans. Wife is firmly set on Hooligans. Others were firmly entrenched with the JR Bentley burger. Only thing for certain is that we all had good burgers that will make anyone swear off McWendysKing forever

I tend to agree that these pubs have better burgers. I think it also helps that they are not making 100 at a time for a line of cars waiting outside.

Heh I feel I have to qualify, I wasn't always DRUNK (at first at least..)

But not even compared to McWendyking (I'm going to use that from now on) I mean places like Fridays, Red Robin (which capitalize on being burger places) these bars top those kind of places for taste.

Bars and Pubs usually have pretty good burgers, and since I don't drink there is no ACF.

I never have "gotten" red robin, I think they are bottom of the barrel, I would even pick a Wendy burger after Wendy ruined them over Red Robin. (Wendy should be drawn and quartered over the burger and fry fiasco - Dave is surely rolling in his grave)

But yeah a little sole proprietor type place usually has the best quality food.

How do you know how bad they are if you've never "gotten" them?

The best burger is the one you made from scratch and chose all the ingredients and grilled in your backyard. But if you really want the best burger in the world it will cost you. The best burger I EVER had: LINK.

I like Red Robin a lot, but I get the chicken there.

Bar food is really good, and this is coming from someone who has at the most one beer. I went to an F1 viewing party in Santa Monica at a British Pub for the Canadian GP. I held out for the breakfast offerings and had a burger and it was one of the best I have ever had.

There's one around here from a celebrity chef for around $8 and $5 during happy hour for any one of them. Beef from Pat Lafrieda in New York which is supposed to be one of the best. One of the few places that actually discloses where the meat comes from which I like. Linky:

That can't possibly be a serious question...

I agree, we have a sports bar/arcade place called Cheeseburgers And More about 1/2 hr north of me, the BEST burgers I have ever had. Most of the sports bars around have pretty good burgers.

I agree with you Nick, some bars just have great burgers. I don't eat beef much anymore but miss it often! There's a place in Scottsdale called "The Lodge" and they have great burgers. My favorite one has a pretzel bun, yummy. The also have a monstrous burger that has grilled cheese sandwiches on each end that serve as the bun! I won't dare touch that though.

I like the good looking bartenders at the sports bars also. Cold beer, burgers and pretty women, aaahhhh what a combination!

Red Robin burgers are horrible. The BEST burgers are from a local chain in/around Houston called Willie's Grill and Icehouse. But yes, bars/pubs usually have excellent burgers. Bar/pub fries are hit and miss.

Bars have better burgers because they use quality meat instead of chain eateries that sell their burgers on a cost factor. Everybody here does know that supermarkets add fat to their ground beef, don't they?
BTW, all the meat we eat in this household was raised with no steroids, antibiotics or hormones and the beef that I feed my family has been on our property since it was born. There really is no comparison.

I agree, a small neighborhood bar generally has the best burgers. My son raves about the " in n out " burgers out west. I have a couple "in n out" shirts he has brought me but sadly the nearest one to me is 2,500 miles away!

In and Out is really awesome. I had them last night like I do every Friday. Probably one of the better fast food places out there.

They are only out West because the restaurants have to be within a certain distance from their warehouse. They don't freeze the buns since they are sponge bread and have a very limited shelf life.
