Whataburger versus In-N-Out

Honestly - for the cost of fast food, I'll pick casual dining when I can get a good deal. There's no big secret to making a decent burger. Just cook it fresh and not with a patty that's been sitting in a warming tray for up to an hour. I personally think "never frozen" beef isn't as important as just cooking it after it's ordered.

Fast food burgers get for looking kind of sad in reality. But I've actually gone to Applebee's and the burger looked pretty close to what it looks like in ads. Maybe not perfect, like zero dents in the bun or everything lined up perfectly, but not looking like a Whopper where everything looks limp.

I like Five-guys and Smashburger, but not for the price. My wife and I tried Smashburger once while visiting Houston (pre-pandemic), two very basic meal "deals" were nearly $30. There's a Five-Guys near me that's always been a bit pricey, but at least a small order of fries was enough for 5 people (hence the name maybe?). I haven't been there in years and I understand they've really gotten expensive, I think the mound-o fries has also been dialed back.

I prefer to make my own. I'll buy a chuck roast and grind it myself before hitting the grill, add some fresh toppings and an onion roll from a local bakery and I have a happy family. Fast food has lost all it's appeal with me.
