Besides the cost factor..$6 for the standard B2 and $9.50 for the HPG...how much of a difference in flow and micron rating is there between the two?

Others can chime in with more precise stats, but in a nutshell, the HPG gives you very fine filtration with only a marginal increase in flow resistance vs. the regular (non-HPG) Baldwins -- i.e., filtration competitive with a PureOne or Mobil 1 but with much better flow than either of those. Only an AMSOil filter (SDF15 is equivalent for this application, IIRC?) might offer marginally better flow and filtration than the B2-HPG, if the cost is worth it to you. Plus, it's a Baldwin (as is the AMSOil technically), so you know it's built like a tank.

Personally, I'm using the B2 on my Lancia, but it's got an olde-skoole Italian engine design (FIAT DOHC inline-4) engineered with wide oil galleries and fairly loose tolerances to allow for thermal expansion in rallying variants, so I know it prefers ample flow over fine filtration.

Thanks for the reply.Right now we're having a little problem trying to figure out a "short center tube" design on the Baldwin filters.Fram even doesn't "short tube" their filters from the cardboard endcaps

B2hpg filter down to 8microns at 50% absolute at 16microns or so and only gives away about 8% flow to the b2. These are not short-tubed--i have cut one open and dont think you could find a better filter anywhere for 3 times the money.

The BALDWIN B2-HPG has been my choice for over a year now (on four vehicles), and the only likely replacements [for me] are:
DONALDSON P169071
FLEETGUARD LF3487

(but their cost is greater).

Read up at these sites (all four) about the mediums being used, the service specs being covered, and the filter build quality.

If the world were falling apart tomorrow, I'd slap the DONALDSON on, keep running the REDLINE, and figure plenty more will break before the engine does.

BALDWIN B2-HPG are $11.69 at Zoro tools. Free shipping over $50, (which once you see how much they carry it is easy to hit $50!)

I am sure he decided on one 13 years ago.

Whatever. Who cares about "dates"?

I'm curious why this filter hasn't gained popularity. I guess the Pure One is just too cost effective.
