top view. notice the thicker pleats to reduce collapse...according to their web site.

fram top notice the thinner pleats and the end is coverd, unlike baldwin where it is open.

baldwin and fram side by side. baldwin on left and fram on right.

the frams media is smoother but baldwin has the pleats.

this is from their site about their filter:
"Baldwin uses two proven methods to separate and stabilize filter pleats.

PermaPleat® – an embossing process that builds dividers between pleats to prevent bunching and to ensure uniform airf low.
Beading – a continuous bead of adhesive around the circumference of the filter´s metal outer wrap, locking the pleat tips in place and preventing movement.

digitaldrifter91, You might notice that the media on the baldwin is lofted(It is fuzy). This lofted fiber will flow better then the media that Fram uses and it will still filter out the dirt. Baldwin and Purolator air filter are more like production OEM in reguard to the qualtiy of the media.

my car needs no metal screen. maybe for urs it might.

i put this filter in as well as the fram and test drove it; i found that the baldwin is very high flow in the high gears...usually my car wont respond past 5800rpm but baldwin did and the fram did not. i think this is a nice filter now =). taking it for a long drive tonight. i will talk more later. take care

well i can tell you today, that the flow on this filter is incredable. really i dont nkow if it had anything to do with changing this filter but now my car picks up better and is alot better with the AC on. i compared this with the fram on the same freeway and tests and never got near baldwin. though i dont have anyting to support my claims...it makes me believe that this baldwin filter is darn good.

see ya fellas...

Are Hastings Air Filters (like their oil filters) comparable to Baldwin? Baldwin doesn't make a filter for my application, Hastings does.

Thanks!

refering to hastings and baldwin, i heard they are made by baldwin but that may or may not mean they are the same but you never know. i want to try a hastings but i really like this baldwin filter...it has alot more power and looks nice. plus i cannot find a hastings website.

the guys at mahle who sold me my baldwin filter are really nice. they called me today cause their company told me that i had the wrong air filter. i confirmed it was the right one.

courteous that he checks up on me. maybe i can get a discount next time =)

I've never seen a Fram filter where the rubber seal wasn't orange. Are you sure that's a Fram?

yea its a fram. the filters that dont have a full seal around it like mine is black but the others that are full rubber seals like my 99 villager and my 86 nissan 300zx are orange.

I recieved my Baldwin air filter today for my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Here are a few pics with my web cam....sorry no digital camera yet. What do you think?

My impressions:
Construction seems very good.
75 pleat count.
Pleats seem thin. I was expecting the pleats to be thicker just like the pics posted by digitaldrifter91.

Here's one of digitaldrifter91's pics:

neat, nice web cam there. well i would think that most filters are constructed the same and the pleats would be a little thicker as well. does it still have the pleat design with one part of the pleat a little bigger than the rest? when u feel it is it like paper, or kinda of a feathery paper...

digitaldrifter91,

The pleats feel more like paper and very firm. Is it possible that the pic you took which I posted was too much of a close-up and makes your pleats look thicker? I don't know but sure looks like yours are thicker. I wonder if it even makes a difference. You asked if one part of the pleats were thicker than the rest. If you're referring to the embossing on the pleats then yes, it has the embossing which I like because it helps keep the pleats separated from each other. Well, my Baldwin is going in today and I'll see how it goes. Thanks.

the angle of my picture may look like the pleats are thicker but in real life they are alot thicker. if u see how i compared it to the fram filter. i never seen my paper this thick before. what model number is ur air filter...i think thats the same one for my 300zx.

in a way ur filter looks near a fram =\, but i dont doubt the filtering capabilities, maybe baldwin is making differnt typ4es of filters for every car. donaldson is one i want to try but they dont make that filter for my car.

The part# is PA4046 for my Baldwin. While I was at PepBoys today I took a look at the Purolator air filters. I looked up my application in the book and found part# A44727. I opened up the box and much to my surprise it is identical to the Baldwin. Same amount of pleats with the embossing and similar black rubber gasket. The pleats felt the same also. Don't know if the paper media is exactly the same but sure looked like it. After spending a couple of hours removing my air box, cleaning off all the oil from the lower box that my Amsoil air filter left behind(what a mess, that stuff is very sticky and a pain to remove), wiping everything off then re-installing the air box, I finally installed the Baldwin air filter. The filter fit nice and snug, it was the perfect size. The seal created when I buttoned it up seems nice and tight. I went for a drive just to see if I notice anything and I think it feels like I have a little more punch now. Could be because it's a new clean filter or just my imagination but nothing negative to report. Can't wait to see what the numbers are for silicon levels at my next oil analysis.

It seems that Baldwin is using different types of media for different applications???

I would expect to see that kind of filtering media in the cheapo off-the-shelf FRAM's and STP's.
