2002 Ford F150 V6 w/ 78k miles. 5k OCIs with Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft FL400S.
I'm pretty sure the rear main seal is leaking, although slow enough to not be a dire problem. Just checked under the truck and noticed a puddle of oil about 3" in diameter. Looked at the seal between the motor and transmission and there is some residual oil still clinging to the bottom of the bell housing.
I've heard a mention on here about additives that swell the seals. Can I get more information on this?
Are there any off the shelf oils that I can use for this?
I also see that AutoRX can be used to remedy this? Looks like the plan is the same as for a typical run. 2oz per quart in crankcase, change at 2500 miles, run dino for another 3000 and then change oil. I had planned on using AutoRX in the spring, anyway.
Here's the thing about the AutoRX solution (as per this page: http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/sealleak.htm). It says that running synthetic after the application may cause the seal to leak again. I typically use syn blend MC 5W-20, so what's the deal here? Should I just go with a straight dino like Pennzoil Conventional or an advertised high mileage oil? Since the syn blend is really mostly dino, is it safe to use?
