a friend of mine did an oil change on his 07 Focus yesterday.
He used a Fram PH9566 oil filter which is a fit for Focus.
when he started the engine, oil spurt out from the oil filter between the space where it connects.
here is a picture of the filter.
left side is another PH9566 filter
right side is the PH9566 filter that my friend used.
you can see the rubber on the top of the right side PH9566 is ticker than the left side PH9566 filter.

is the PH9566 filter that my friend used a defective filter that caused the spurt?

It does look thicker than usual, though I wouldn't think it's so thick that it would cause a serious leak unless it's uneven. Do you have any pics with the gaskets removed?

Impossible to tell from the picture. But I would guess that since that's where the leak was at....something was going on there.

Did he tighten it correctly?
Forget to lube the gasket with clean oil before installing?
Sure it's the correct filter?
Clean the mounting plate well before installing?

Ill bet you he got a forgery, a fake FRAM. look at the print/font it looks different. Also the texture of the rubber o ring is different as well as the rib at the base.

The registered trademark is also off.. farther away from the M in FRAM

I also think it's a forgery, you can even see Chinese letters on it. Probably comes from Fram City, China. I got my knife from Stainless Steel City, China. It rusted in 2 months. Another magnifying glass I bought, it came from Germany, China. Stamped Made in Germany. Also diamonds galore coming out of China. Koreans stole secret from GE. Chinese stole secret from Koreans and pass the savings on to you.

Hard to say .Is the gasket not pushed into the grove? Was the oil filter properly installed and tightened? I have seen problems mainly leaks at the seam where the base is crimped to the can and and pin hole type leaks [the holes were microscopic] in oil filters over the years. Stuff happens. These leaks were with name brand filters and not many.

my friend is Chinese
so there is no surprise that he wrote Chinese on the filter
the chinese written on the filter means "problematic"

got a few more pictures of the filter

the thickness of the "problematic" gasket

the thickness of a normal gasket

Left- The problematic filter, Right- the normal quality A-OK filter
you can see the left filter is taller somehow

Do you have a pic of the top of the normal quality A-OK filter without the gasket? Also the very last pic, is that with or without the gasket?

i dun have an A-OK filter without the gasket atm
the very last picture, both filters r with the gasket.

I am not sure what the height difference is but I am thinking it could be the difference in the thickness of the gaskets.
