Back in the '80s

Back in 1980's I was confused with 2 convertible sports cars.
Both are Italian
Both have the name Spider on them
Looks almost the identical
But different brand

I had a 1966 GTO, tri-power 389, 4 speed back in the day. I once ran a '55 Chevy with a built 302 and we were neck and neck, shift for shift. A dead even race. A good small block Chevy, especially a 327, was a screamer. Back then, before the 302 Z28 Camaro, hotrodders would take the stock forged 283 crankshaft (3" stroke) and either bore the block out to 4" or use an early 327 block with the 4" bore, use solid lifters and the Duntov 30-30 cam, balance and blueprint it. Except they referred to it as a 301. A good one could rev to 7,500 rpm and make over 400 HP with open headers. The stock Pontiac big blocks would not go past 6000 rpm without floating the valves. My dream car is a '32 Ford Hi Boy roadster, 4 speed, black with red tuck and roll leather, steel wheels with baby Moon hubcaps and a dual quad 327 solid lifter built to around 450 HP.
At the time my 65 had a 350 Chevy in it, unported 041 heads, Crane Fireball (216 @ .050), headers, four speed, 3.90's. It ran pretty well against the 5.0 Mustangs and even beat a couple of 400 Firebirds, but it ran out of breath at 5500 rpm. My buddy's 327 was built right, had a decent sized cam, ported heads, and it would just keep pulling hard up to 6200 or so.

Now I have a 505 Pontiac, edelbrock heads, hydraulic roller (236 @ .050). It also runs out of breath at 5500 rpm, but I bet it would put a hurt on that 327 ...

The E30 318i was nice, but no ball of fire with the long lived M10. The 318is with the DOHC M42 is a sweetheart.

As a kid, I thought all of that design e30 BMW was a "318i" - since that was obviously the cheapest and most common model.
I recall being snubbed at a repair shop while waiting for my dad's Volvo to finish it's repairs (does it ever end?) and the owner got all in a huff when I complimented him by saying, "nice 318i"

That 16,5 is 44K in 2021 dollars. I thought the 80's was a very expensive time to live with sky high interest rates, expensive apartments and low wages.

My first engineering job at Bell Labs only paid 14K first year 1980.

A new mitsubishi starion 2.6 would cost my whole years salary!

I would love to put my 166hp high revving 2 litre from my Ecosport in to that FIAT looking Miata.
last of the oversquare, mechanical lashed DOHC sporty running engines.
Then fix that out of character "Queen Mary list" with some beefier anti-sway bars fore and aft.

I am from a time when you don't want your light two seater spyder to roll when tossed.
