B12 piston soak question

Six 5k OCIs, used it on a couple other vehicles and also saw no difference through the oil fill cap. It wasn’t worth the costly expense for a 5k mile oil so I stopped using it.
"Costly expense"? It's the same price as all of the other high quality OTS synthetics. What are you running? Bulk 5W-30 you buy in 55 gallon drums? Supertech takes you down like $10. $10 over 5000 miles is nothing. How much does it cost to fill your tank? I bet it's more than $10.

You may not see a ton through the oil fill cap if you have a baffle that doesn't get soaked in oil. I would be willing to bet the rest of your engine looks pretty good if the valve cover came off.

@tired As I mentioned in the post before yours, running $6 a quart oil for 5k miles versus something I can do extended drains on adds up when you drive more than 50k miles a year.

Thanks. I hadn't read that when I replied.

I can see why you'd want a different oil. 50,000 miles is wild. You're approaching long haul trucker territory. I'm curious, why do you drive that much?

What oil did you switch to? I'd probably be running HPL and doing 15k OCIs if I were in your shoes. Wow.

@tired All good! I am in the middle of two changes of Amsoil High Mileage that I had already and then going to try 15k miles on Amsoil Signature Series.

I travel a lot - partly due to living in a rural area. But I also take care of a relative who is chronically sick and sometimes have to drive two states away for specific medical appointments. Good thing I love driving!

Is that the Sienna you're putting the miles on? Or the Subie in your pfp?

I bet that Sienna could handle 15k easy. I'd be more nervous with the Subie. I'd probably want a used oil analysis to confirm at least once.

I feel like the Subaru would be happy to do extended intervals. EJ253 is easy on oil, and probably consumes enough that at least 1 to 2 quarts replenished in 15k. One of my customers does 8-10k oil changes on her ej253 Subaru with Valvoline Restore and Protect. While it hasnt ever had a used oil analysis, it does not look scary in the drain pan and the filter always looks great on inspection. I'd love to see someone take Valvoline Restore and Protect to the limit in one of these

Yeah I agree. I think 10k on AMSOIL would do great, but 15k in a Subaru makes me nervous since they're hard on oil. I don't have any used oil analysis or anything to back it up, but just knowing they are hard on oil and that others have taken them to high mileage on 10k OCIs on AMSOIL, that's where I'd be comfortable.

The turbo EJ is harder on oil but the non turbo is actually very easy on oil and either in the right circumstances could do extended. I've done a few 13-17k HPL intervals on my FB25 subaru and would try extended Valvoline Restore and Protect intervals on my ej253 subaru if it wasn't already doing extended HPL intervals. I wouldn't hesitate to extend the interval on a non turbo provided that the level was being checked, no fueling issues or underlying cleanliness issues with the piston rings or avcs system.

There was a UOA posted by a member who did 15K OCI on a Toyota (Tacoma?) 4.0 V6 with Valvoline Restore and Protect.

IIRC they drive alot of miles too (5K+/m) & they gradually increased their interval from 10K=>12.5K=>15K with UOAs.

I haven't seen that one, but I've seen the immaculate UOA from Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 in a 4Runner with a 10k mile OCI. Do you have a link?

No I don't at the top of my head, but I could have the vehicle wrong.

I do remember it was the Toyota 4.0L V6.

Well you should pull fuel pump fuse(s) for one
I just disconnect the wire going into the distributor (mine was cap and rotor), or on newer car just disconnect the 12V wire going into the coil should be fine. A bit of fuel going into the cylinder during crank is not a big deal IMO. The big part is to get the plugs out to avoid hydrolock and no voltage into the coil to avoid burning out the coil without a plug. If I am not concerned about the plug sparking while cranking igniting the fuel in the air I would even leave the plug on the wire.
