B. and S. Oil Filters: Better Ones Around?

I would be happy if B&S published apecs on their black and yellow filters. Micron/bypass-psi/flow/composition.

I just want to make a more informed coice is all.

OH, and who makes the filters as well.

Was at Lowes today, and while meandering through lawn/garden, I came across the yellow "premium" B&S filter (#696854) hanging there beside the "standard" 492932 black filter. They both cross to WIX 57035, the filter rainman mentioned earlier.

Why so many different part #'s/lengths for what are basically the same filter, I wonder? It looks like they're made in 0.2" length increments. Must drive the filter guys nuts trying to keep 'em all in inventory.

WIX makes NAPA Gold and CarQuest Blue filters. (identical except for the paint job)
For a NAPA filter, use the last 4 digits of the Wix#
For a CarQuest filter, replace the first 2 digits of the Wix# with 85.
Example. Wix 51348 becomes CarQuest 85348 or NAPA Gold 1348.

15 microns, low restriction, more capacity, more surface area to cool oil if you have the room for the longer than stock B & S filters.

I use them on my JD rider with a B & S 22hp

Just had the thought that they may be low pressure and low volume oiling system and an overly restrictive filter could do
more harm than good.

i installed an oil presure gauge on my 15 hp B&S tractor it has the same oil presure as my car ..i was very surprized cold 80psi and hot it drops to 50psi

I used to think that way too. Any filter is a huge step up from none.

My aircraft, a Cessna Cardinal 177RG has a Lycoming IO-360, 200HP engine without any form of filter. It's first run lasted nearly 40 years and made it well past the overhaul period. After disassembly, there was little wear on the parts. Yes, the camshaft rusted out and failed. That has nothing to do with a filter.

Yes, the engine now has a standard CH43109 full flow filter.

My point, any filter, regardless of micron rating is helpful. But, it won't necessarily result in longer engine life.

"M-1 102 works for me. Filters a lot better."

Funny how Pete591 was worried about automotive filters being too restrictive ... but ended up picking out one of the most restrictive ones.

Some food for thought from another reading.

The yellow B&S filter is no better than the black one and internally they resemble the Champion line of filters to the "T".

The Motorcraft FL400S has all the same specs including bypass pressure as the B&S filter and is longer.

I used an FL400S when I changed my oil in the Scag at the end of the season. Had to work around the throttle cable but now it's fine. I've got one more Wix filter that I'll use some time in the future and then it'll be all FL400S after that.
