As a general rule, all of the oil is on the self. The oldest bottle is at the back, of the slot. The newest bottle is at the front. If you purchase oil, it is replaced with whatever is currently in your regional warehouse.

At the closest AZ to me, the Katrina packaging is just now showing up on the shelves.

For all practical purposes, follow GMorg's and boone88rr's posts.

For a bit more nit-picky detail:

AZ can keep oil in the back, you have to ask. In my experience, most places had everything on the shelf.

Would the store employees think it was strange that I was asking about more castrol 0w30 when I left the gold or US stuff on the shelf?

The "quality" of employees varies. Some brush me off as if I'm wasting their time - others are eager to learn about date codes, GC, Green vs Gold etc.

Should I go back to the stores that I "cleaned out" of green, or should I assume that if there was gold on the shelf, then future re-stocking would be gold?

AutoZones have been known to move inventory from store to store. So if a store you visted had no green, it may have green now or in the future.
This isn't the most common thing, but it happens. Good places to check are "high volume" stores and new stores. They tend to move stagnant products into these places in hopes of better sales.

There's always a chance, but it's unlikely. They would only have green if their inventory tracking was poor.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to their stocking and inventory procedures.

I have only been to one AZ where the old stuff was in front. I don't know if the employees did that... or another BITOG'er on the hunt. :)

I have asked a few stores if they have any 0w30 in the back. All have said no. It's not a very popular product outside of the fairly small circle that is BITOG (respectively).

Around here, it is safe to assume that any store where I have cleaned out the green is cleaned out for good. There is an endless supply of gold.

As far as it still being in the distribution centers, who knows? I think they follow a "first in, first out" procedure there as well. My dream is that some day soon they decide to clear out their centers of "old oil" and put some M03 and M04 on clearance in the stores.

It boggles my mind how 6 year old oil can sit on a shelf in some of these stores.

There are several kinds of AZ store lay-out. In some cases the oil product can be fed in from the back of the shelves, in other cases the shelves are against a wall and can only be re-stocked from the front.

In the former generally new stock is fed from the back, and the chances of finding green GC are slim as this is a First In, First Out (FIFO) situation. There is however, always the chance that the employees will stock these shelves from the front anyway.

In the latter one has to dig all the way to the back to be sure there is no green on the shelf. This is First In, Last Out (FILO) system.

Then there are the smaller AZ stores which don't even stock 0W-30.

Sorry if these questions have been answered elsewhere, but I haven't seen a thread with all of them together.

In my recent search for green GC< I have noticed that some Autozones had one to 5 bottles of gold, then some green, and then the old US stuff.

Others have gold and then green.

Some had just gold, and some have just gold and US.

So, does AZ keep oil in the back, or is it all on the shelf?

Is there a chance that there is any green left in distribution centers?
