Axle splines stuck in the knuckle

I am stuck. Attempted to replace the front struts on my pilot. Axle splines won’t come off, don’t know what to do. Please share some ideas. I’ve tried pin punch and hammered on it for hours. Picked up a wheel hub removal tool, it won’t fit over the studs. I’m giving up

I'm assuming the top ball joint has been disconnected. assuming that is true have you tried bending the cv joint at the transaxle and pulling it out on that side? I'm also curious why that is even being removed typically once top ball joint has been disconnected you have enough play to remove entire strut.

Throw the old axle nut over the threads before beating on the end next time so that you don't mushroom the axle.

Otherwise my eyes may be lying but, it looks like the axle is free from the hub already... if it moves in and out then it's free and you just have to remove the strut mounts or ball joint (which ever is easier) to allow the axle to be removed from the hub. If you removed the strut side, I recommend an alignment.

But for struts, can you not just unbolt it and push down to make it clear? I don't think i've even pulled an axle just for struts?

But for just wheel studs, can you not bang them out of the opening of the caliper? It looks like they'd fit just swimmingly.
Looks free to me too. As already asked, the driveshaft is removed from the transmission, right? Or the hub is disconnected enough to allow it to swing outward?

Driveshaft is in transmission, haven’t removed it. Lower ball joint and tie rod are both disconnected. The axle splines won’t move inside the hub..

Lower ball joint and tie rod are removed. Tried on all sides, won’t budge

As I see it

Option A: air hammer plus pointed chisel

Option B: you need VERY specific pressing force. Knock out three wheel studs (since this is 5-lug) and run bolts that will fit your hub puller. Just use washers behind the hub face. You'll probably need a trip to the store to get bolts long enough

unbolting the hub from the knuckle to see if more play frees it up. will the strut just unbolt from the knuckle, letting the knuckle fall out of the way?

I'd take the whole bearing out. But soak the back part of the axle with PB many times over to help eat into the seal a bit.

Also make sure you don't hit the CV boot band too hard. If that comes off, holy god what a grease fest!

This is so frustrating. All the videos I’ve watched it would only take a few hits and axle would break loose. My biggest concern now is that splines got “crossthreaded”, which means both axle and hub are trashed

End game is to take the whole assembly to a hydraulic press. Took two of us to get it positioned. I left one under pressure overnight (VW golf/jetta) with a ton of Rostoff and in the morning gave it one more pump and it popped... So satisfying. On the other hand the ears might break first, then you need a new knuckle.

Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you.

Good luck! Please let us know how it turns out.

Zero chance of that happening.

Put some heat on it and hit it properly, with a large hammer. No "pin punch" unless it's also big.

Big air hammer with a flat bit on the spline face is my go-to method and has not failed me, but I realize not everyone has pneumatics available. I do so with the ball joint attached to not lose impacting force on the hammer blows.

You mentioned the hub puller didn't fit correctly, but this an inclined plane removal tool that fits is going to be worth seeking out. Here is an example of what I mean:

Assuming a hub puller with the correct adapter isn't available a 2 jaw puller is a more universal option which may yield results.

This is the one that I’ve gotten, and it won’t fit. Grinding down one of the ears would help to fit it on, but it’s a rental so can’t do that
