I pulled my driver's side knuckle to replace the wheel bearing. EVERYTHING was rusted tight, like I've never witnessed on a car I've worked on. I have 113K on it but I've got to think it's the briny brew they're dumping on the roads here in PA that has a lot to do with this. That and the pot holes/canyons did a number on my highway warrior this year. Anyway I was using a homemade puller to get the spindle out of the hub. I had the car in first gear and was torquing a 3/4-16 bolt to push it out. I made a few mistakes and I hope it isn't too serious. This live and learn is killing me. So the spindle was nearly clear and the hub started to rotate, like it was in neutral. I checked and it was in gear. I forget what I did next but after I got the hub off the shaft the inner boot on the axle assembly is twisted, like either it rotated there or in the tranny. The shaft seems to be working okay when rotating on it by hand and it is engaged in the tranny, it seems to be fine except for the obvious boot distortion. I won't know more until I get it back together. My son has the knuckle at the shop to replace the bearing. What did I do and should I be shopping for what part? I found that after market axle shafts aren't available yet for these cars. If the axle is toast it will be a new used one for me. If something happened with the tranny it will be parked for awhile and hopefully OT picks back up at work. Should I do anything with the axle? I was going to pull it out of the tranny but now I'm thinking what good will that do? What are the mechanics of this and what part probably is broken or "adjusted?"

It sounds like you accidentally pulled the axle shaft out of your cv joint to me. Take the boot off and re-assemble the cv joint. The boot can be reused if it's not torn. HTH

The non-scientific comparison of my 07 Sonata and our other vehicles made me believe the Sonata was rusting more rapidly than our other vehicles, despite that fact that it was newer.

The body seemed fine, but the suspension, fuel and brake lines sure seemed to be rusting more rapidly than I would expect. I suspect that may be a cost-cutting area for Hyundai. There are only so many ways to reduce the cost of a vehicle when you're a value brand.

My girlfriend has a 2009 Hyundai Accent.

She has two sets of steelies from the Dealership, one for Summer tires, the other for Winter tires.

I was looking at her Winter rims and thought they were rusted worse than boat anchors.

Then when I installed her Summer set of tires I really found it odd, that only being driven in the milder months they were rusty too.

My 2010 Honda Fit also has two sets of steelies, both sets don't have any rust on them.

I think Mazda got in trouble for the same cost cutting tactics by buying low grades of steel.

Everyone is very quick to say how Hyundai has surpassed Honda for quality when you go to purchase a Hyundai.

The same people are equally as quick to offer you peanuts when you go to sell your Hyundai, and be very quick to point out, "Well, it isn't a Honda".

I don't see any savings in buying Hyundai, so why bother.

Hyundai....remember Excel,Scoupe,Accent and you will never get the taste of lemon out of your head.Hyundai isn't even the "value" brand now, thats KIA,but those Koreans sure cheap out when building cars.Good for a few years, but they will catch up with you.Years back I almost bought a new Scoupe....good thing I didn't,you don't see any of those now.

This was only the contact surfaces, the rotor, the spindle thru the hub. There is no rust at all on parts that have access to washing, the sheet metal, the suspension, the fuel and brake lines. This is getting off topic here. I am very pleased with my purchase so far. The car has less visible and surface rust at this period in its life than my civic did.

your about 15 years in the past friend. this person clearly is an outlier in the 80/20 rule of vehicle usage. educate yourself before embarrassing yourself next time.

Everything's fine, the shaft popped out of the tranny while I was pressing out the outer spindle and somehow rotated and then popped back in. Just had to pull it out of the tranny and rotate it and pop it back in. What a relief. Car is nice and quiet again too. That bearing was getting loud.
