I'm running W7 32-bit. I just decided to uninstall Avira and try Avast! free instead. Immediately I noticed everything takes longer to open up/load. Is that your experience too?

Is AVG any quicker? I moved away from AVG about 2 years ago because their soft become slow and bloated, but may they have improved since?

Kept saying that my current version would no longer be supported soon and asking me to install version 10. So i started reading on line what is the most effective free A/V these days and found reports saying it's Avast!, so I figured I'd give it a try.

My Norton Internet Security sub just ran out. Looking for the best deal (free after rebate/or close) to re-up. In the mean time went with Microsoft Security Essentials, seems decent.

I've noticed AVG to slow things down, but both Avast (what I currently use and have for a few years) and Antivir don't.

Avira is still the top rated free A/V according to AV Comparatives.

Version 10 is flawless for me; hardly any slow down and updates are much better.

Avast has been catching a lot of bugs for me. Slows when I first go online for updates, otherwise no complains at all.

+1 on Microsoft Security Essentials. I've been running it on my Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit desktop for over a year without a single problem of any kind.

I've been using Avast for quite a while now on W7 64 bit. Doesn't slow it down at all for me. Best I've used so far. I've used norton, mcafee, and AVG, and they had huge impacts on performance on other computers for me.

Best way of speeding things up for me has been (you may have already done all these):

1. Turn off any uneeded startup and regular processes via msconfig command.

2. Get all files and folders off the desktop, use only shortcuts there

3. Use Ccleaner often for both the "analyze/run" cleanup and registry cleanup.

I ran MSE on my XP netbook for several months without issue. I eventually installed Ubuntu on the netbook, so I had no more need for MSE on it. I still use it on my desktop and my kid's W7 netbook. Love MSE!!!

I don't have any problems with Avast after I turned off auto updating. I update it manually when I first fire up the pc.

It would slow my browser down some when updating, Firefox being the worst! Google Chrome not so much.
