Autozone, why the 5+ quart jugs?

I did a little shopping at Autozone the other day, needed a cheap oil change for the saturn.

I came in for their $14.99 deal on 5 quarts of Quaker State, and a STP filter.

Sure enough the fine print got me again, the deal only includes a cheap filter with a retail price of 4 dollars or something and of course mine was $7 and change.

So the 15 dollar deal became 18, and not really a deal anymore.

I got the jug home, and looked it it. It read 5.33 quarts I believe. I dumped off a little of a quarter of a quart into an empty quart bottle, and wondered why they sell a jug like that? I have never owned a car that took 5.33 quarts of oil.

Advance auto parts sells mostly gallon jugs only. Is walmart the only place that sells a 5 quart jug? I'll go back to walmart from now on, its cheaper anyways, with no gimmicks.

I have noticed this a lot lately, I recently filled my Honda with 4qts of oil from a M1 AFE 5qt jug from walmart, and there is still 1.5qts in the jug... I know they say 5qts, but I am starting to doubt that every jug has exactly "5qts" in it...

the only time I am going to complain about it though is if I get less than 5qts..

There is no standard size sump anymore, so its hard to make jugs that meet all needs, 5.33 quarts = 5 liters which seems to be a world wide standard.

I don't know for sure, but I think Walmart has some sort of exclusive rights to the 5 quart jug, so parts stores have to do 5.1 or 5+.

+1 on the qt sizes q.

OP: I don't like the small print at AZ either but how are you going to get a better deal at walfart? A 5qt jug of PYB is like $15.97 and a OCOD is at least $6. Consider the extra oil you got as top off, and comfort in the fact you DID save money over WM.

WM is getting to be kind of lousy with their oil prices and filter selection.IMO

There is no question the autopart stores have the best deals now, you just have to compare which one that month is giving better deals.

Actually, it's pretty smart. 5.33 quarts = 5 liters. This means they only need one sized container and one filling line to distribute around the world. The only change necessary is the front and back label.

If they do have a different size for WalMart, that's understandable since WalMart probably sells more motor oil than all of the auto parts stores combined.

I have one, but it's a diesel, and HDEO only comes in gallons and quarts. Very annoying!

My vehicle oil refill is 6 quarts so I wish they had a 6 quart jug. WM is doing us a great deal with the 5 quart jug price compared to the 4 quart jugs at my APs.

that's odd....lol. wonder what the deal is with the 5.33 quarts? lol. I can understand perhaps WM, or [censored], even SOPUS/Pennzoil...since they seem to have that marketing terms on all their 5 quart jugs...

Its because Walmart is exclusive with most oil companys on 5qt jug so they had to come up with something different.

No actually it is the reduction of producing so many sizes of containers, since the metric system is the world standard the companies have choose to just use one size, at least it will reduce the cost of the products a bit.

My 2010 Nissan Xterra and wifes Mazda CX7 both have 5.3 (5 litre) quart sump. Now I hate to buy 5 qrt jugs.

OK. I get the 5.3 quart (5 liter) packaging. My Ford Fusion has a 5.3 qt sump.

Here's what I don't get. With the exception of Motorcraft and Peak, all of the other oils at O'Reilly's are 5.1 quart. Why 5.1 quarts instead of 5 quarts??

and you know this how? I happen to know for a fact that AZ went to the oil companies and came up with this to compete with walmart for the large jug business. If you have facts to back up your claim please link them....
