I walked into Autozone today, saw a table and sign that read "5 quart jugs $5 each..... all quarts $1 each..." I grabbed 14 quarts of 5w20... all of the 5 quart jugs were already gone. The kid ringing them up was hilarious, the register kept crashing out on him. After this I went to a second location and was told they were sold out of all of the oil. There is another across town I will check tomorrow.

Quaker State, Pennzoil, and STP were older containers and were the brands being blown out.

Thanks for the tip - I'll be near an Autozone on Tuesday, I'll take a look.
I always nice to add to my stash at $1 a quart of full synthetic oil.

Thanks for the tip.

I've used all 3 brands.
Quaker State, STP, and some Pennzoil oils meet the Dexos 1 gen 3 specification
which meets stricter sludge/varnish deposit limits than API SQ.

My stash now has 32 5 quart jugs from various clearance and rebate sales consisting of

Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30 (Tractor Supply clearance)
Quaker State High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30 (Rebate)
Super Tech High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30 (5% credit card cashback before Walmart cancelled their partnership with Capital One)

I just used the 2 Castrol 5 quart jugs of oil I got in the last rebate in late 2025.

Stopped at mine on way home from a Dr appt. They looked at me like I had a third eye on my forehead.

They did have some STP synthetic for $27.99 though! I'm sure it's just fine, but $27.99? No .......
Same here, I checked two stores. $5.50 a single quart for STP. $27.99 for the 5 quart. The did have a dusty Castrol GTX gray jug 5w20 for $26.99. The counter girl seemed irritated that I wasn't interested at that price.

I checked the other stores in my area. None of the three other stores had any idea what I was talking about until a manager who knows the guy at the store I first went to came over.

Basically, he explained that the Autozone I first stopped at is part of a commercial hub type business. This store looks like a regular AZ sandwiched between a Pep Boys tire and auto center and the Autozone 'hub' location for local deliveries.

In fact it is all under one roof which used to be a huge Pep Boys that went out of business a few years ago. The Pep Boys auto repair is still where it was but the retail side of the Pep Boys is now the dual AZ retail and hub store.

I had no idea that the AZ retail part which looks like every other AZ in town inside was some sort of special store. That explains the oil deal only at that particular store and not the others.

One thing I did find interesting is that at one of the other stores there were zero Quaker State products on the shelf. None. Zero.

Pennzoil, STP, Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, and Shell were it.

O'Reilly does this, too. Certain stores will have more space "warehouse" space and are hubs to distribute to other stores in the area.

Hmm, so far only 1 store in FL? I will drive to my two nearest stores today but not holding my breath. I'm still bitter after the year-end Home Depot fiasco. They had a large quantity of $1 oil filters, in stock according to site. I went to 2 stores only to be told they "just disposed of" the clearance tables.

LOL.. were these the Fram filters HD carried? I might have driven around back and took a peek into their dumpster to find the filters. 'Ya just missed it'.... or they were lying to get people into the store.

Is AutoZone actually getting people to buy STP oil for $27.99 a jug? I don't understand their pricing at all......

Only time I have ever gotten an "oil score" at an auto parts place was O'Reillys, probably 2017 or so. Happened to be in store and the guy in front of me at checkout (I was getting windshield wiper fluid on sale) had a 5 quart jug of Havoline Full Synthetic (Deposit Shield stuff.) Rang up $7.99..... I guess it was being clearanced out. The checkout guy was surprised too. It still showed full price on the floor sticker. I went and grabbed 7 of them.. There was a LOT more. They had a ton. Didn't want to be greedy.

Stopped at 3 Autozone locations today in north Austin. No oil clearance to be had. STP oil was regularly priced at 25.99-27.99. The third location actually had a big table in the middle of the store with an assortment of jugs and quarts. I asked an employee if any were on sale, he shrugged, picked up jug and few bottles, scanned them... all regularly priced.

Oh, they had all-time great deals in the day! Gallons of Delo 400 SAE 30 for 99 cents (or LESS!), and large quantities of Mobil Delvac 1 / Mobil 1 Truck and SUV and Castrol Magnatec for $1/quart! Still have some of the D1 & Magnatec left...
