Automotive Fluids You'd Never Use

Got my bulletproof vest on....so here goes.

Anything from Amsoil....there i said it.
Everything Amsoil I have seen actually tested was always top of the heap. Severe Gear for example.

I don't use it because I do very short OCI on every fluid, and I am a tightwad. If I ever had a known problematic piece of mechanical equipment Amsoil is exactly what it would get.

I've used Amsoil before, but since I go through a lot of oil/fluids it doesn't really make sense and isn't cost effective to order "boutique" oils and fluids for a wide variety of applications. I do think they make some good products.

I've learned to never say never as far as claiming to never use certain fluids. I thought I would never use Lucas oil stabilizer, or gas station no-name brand motor oil. I've used both in the last year. The no-name gas station engine oil was all that was available when I helped a friend revive a piece of antique machinery miles away from anything in upstate NY. The Lucas is for a neighbor single mom's Jeep Commander 3.7L that has 200k and leaks and burns its entire sump-full of oil in 3000 miles. I taught her how to check it and add some, but she can't seem to keep up with it, and the quart of Lucas seems to be the only way it shows up for an oil change/refill without the oil pressure light flickering and nothing in it.

Any Lucas product that goes in the engine.
I must admit that I just bought Lucas Marine Lower Unit Gear oil only because that what was the only thing available in the parts store. Normally they have other brands (Mystik usually) but they were out. I have used Lucas rear diff oil in the past with no issues on my old Toyota.

And I've used Valvoline Maxlife ATF (in my old 2012 Rav4 V6) for years until I sold it with almost 219,000 miles and it still shifted fine.

Amsoil ATF has never failed. They do make several varieties so it's not that universal. (UTL, ATL, ATF, OTF, OTL, ATD, ART, CTG, CTJ, DCT)

That said, I had several "universal Dexcool" (not Amsoil) failures over the years - I just don't like Dexcool I guess.

Even though I'm an Amsoil dealer, I have an open mind.
For an up and coming atf change, ford 10r140 takes ULV. I use several Amsoil products in different places, but have to see more data or specs on the Amsoil ULV before I were to fill my $10k transmission with it. The spec sheet does not show the ford spec listed specifically. It just says something like "Cool for Ford too". I have downloaded every document I can find from Amsoil, and got no additional data. I also found more other companies manufacture ULV then I thought. Still thinking there is something better then Mercon ULV, but jury still out.

What exact vehicle and year?

Pennzoil. I was driving an air cooled VW with new slugs and jugs (big bore 40 kit!) when it got hot enough to thin the just installed Castrol 30 to the point of the oil light on at idle. Wanting to get the possibly heat damaged oil out, I changed it with Penzoil 30. Pretty much seized it the next afternoon. The Pennzoil didn't hold up as well as the Castrol.

Pennzoil seized her up in a day, did it?

It's a low mileage F350 with 10R140. I have an aftermarket high cap transmission pan to install and may use different fluid if I were convinced it were better then Mercon ULV. I really like and have gallons of Amsoil products running in my family's 6 vehicles. These 10r140s misbehave/fail... something i am trying to avoid. Should it do so, I don't want denials of warranty due to unapproved fluids. I follow transmission rebuilds and have asked lots of questions and they have been great with strait answers, for someone who is not a customer. And I yet have questions. I have the spec sheet you copied, I also have seen lots of videos of amsoil guys pushing LV for use in ULV applications (before amsoil had a ULV). I'm going too long here....I'm not yet convinced it's better

Well, the Castrol held up better the day before. The big bore kit very well could have been tight absolutely. Installing the factory heater boxes didn't help much either. These were the old style which collected hot air from the bottom of the cylinders, not the around the exhaust tube style. I'm sure that it isn't totally Pennzoil's fault that it seized, but there was a clear difference compared to Castrol at the time. This was in 1985. Just one of those illogical personal quirks I suppose.

Still under factory warranty?

Use factory fluid for comfort

Amsoil will cover you if the AT falls because of the fluid. But nobody (ATF Manufacturer) will cover an inherently defective AT

Yes still under warranty. You should understand believe Amsoil ULV is a better product, but would like to know more about lubrisity testing ( valve body movements, planetary wear, clutch pack holding/slipping ) etc. Not here to put YOU on the spot, I appreciate your input. Amsoil needs to put more data/videos out there to PROVE to me and others their product is better. They seem to have done it with motor oil....if they stand by their product....convince me it's better and why.

Surprised no one has brought up Triax yet.
I have looked at triax for sure. Like Amsoil, I would like to find someone using it and why (not just people selling it). I had one builder who only uses green diamond and then guarantees those granny's for several years....now thats an endorsement. I had never heard of it...I am intrigued,... as I am about trial.
