Just had the trans rebuilt in my wifes 99 firebird. Now the fluid is starting to turn black. It works ok and doesn't slip. The shop has all kinds of excuses...it wasn't black before it was rebuilt. Any ideas? TY

I know that alot of newer transmissions have carbon fiber materials in them, some of the CVT's out there have notes about this in the manuel, and will turn the the fluid black within a couple thousand miles.

You might want to call the shop and ask them.

However, if it is just a rebuilt 99 transmission, I would drive it around town, make sure you get up to highway speeds to get through all the gears.
1000 miles or so, then go get it serviced.
It might be interesting to put 6oz of Auto RX in there before the servicing to get all the residual break in stuff out.

BTW, I have about 30,000 miles on my '02 taurus since the transmission was last serviced, and the fluid is still pretty red.

I would change the fluid out. I was reading my manual about trans removal and they mentioned about flushing the trans line to the radiator. btw, how much did the trans rebuild cost?

I would be concerned, I know transmission fluid doesn't turn black from the factory.

Find out what ATF it was filled with?
Take a sample for a UOA and have it flushed with a better fluid.

Yes, I agree---red is pretty

Yes makes you wonder if they flushed the trans lines.

How did the trans go out? I would have the shop drop the pan and inspect it. What warranty do you have?

Yes black ATF is not good. I would take it back to the transmission shop. I had a 88 Towncar with 190K miles, fluid was dark so I serviced it. 1,000 miles later the fluid was dark again, 1K after that the trans needed rebuilding.

BTW, what kind of excuses is the shop giving you?

Make sure that you are nearby when the pan gets dropped. That will tell a lot about what is going on. If they are trying to hide something they could clean it.
They could then throw in some clean fluid and say it looks just fine, what's the problem?

I would not tamper with anything concerning the trans. That could give them an out..........

That makes sense. I'd take it back and have them drop the pan while you watch and see what is found. If everything is fine they have nothing to hide. If everything isn't fine they need to fix it.

The car is back in his shop,I'm waiting to hear what he thinks after he drops the pan. Here is the complete story.....trans was making a noise in P and N, I took it to him to check. The lugs were worn off the 3-4 clutches BUT THE FLUID WAS CLEAN LIKE NEW.He replaced the clutches and few seals and the rear planet because he said it was noisey(i didn't hear anything). After that 1st gear WAS noisey! so he took it back apart and replaced it again! NOW the fluid is turning black........and i'm turning RED! bill so far was 1300 dollars.

I hope you meant the bill for the rebuild not more money after the rebuild????? Please tell me this is not more money after the rebuild?

You should have a warranty and should not be paying for anything else. Why don't they rebuild an extra trans and when they are done replace yours with it. I hope they are capable of rebuilding one properly.........

You can always try this: Wear a black leather jacket to the shop when you go to see the guy with some jeans, a black t-shirt and some heavy black shoes or boots. Don't shave for 2 days. Then have your wife call you on your cell phone while you are standing in front of the guy and loudly say the following: "Yo Vinny whats up? OH YEAH well you tell him that he either takes care of it NOW or I am sending Angelo, Carmen and Little Mo down there to have a talk with him and see if he will change his mind". Then slam the phone shut and look up at the guy and ask...so what is up with this transmission you supposedly fixed?

He says the fluid isn't really black...its just turning color from the new clutches????? He wants to take it to a GM dealer for them to test it on their scanner, If it checks out ok he wants to let it be as it is. The GM dealers scanners can look at alot more things like the EPC etc.He did replace the fluid. He said he will honor the 1 year warranty if it burns up so i guess i can't really loose. The guy has a good reputation and has not screwed me around, got on it right away every time.

It is turning color because there is slippage, generating high heat.
