I keep seeing this stuff on this forum. I decided to visit the website. Sounds like the best stuff ever. It just seems a little scary putting something into your engine that has that type of cleaning power. Is this stuff harmful to your motor? Is it abrasive? What are some of your opinions, experiences, etc...?

It's just ester.

It may sound like a leap of faith but the truth is, this cleaner is as gentle as it gets to clean out the crud inside your engine. While many folks claimed gains in the area of less varnish buildup on the head area, etc. I'm not somuch into visual appeal but it's ability to clean out the oil galleries, hydraulic valve lash adjusters (Mazda style), piston oil control ring gooves area, etc. for that's where you tend to get the most benefits out of AutoRx. whether it cleans out the "cosmetic" side of varnish, I pretty much leave that to the rest of the BITOGers to debate on...

My 2c's worth.

Even more important. Add a bottle to clean oil/filer and drive it like you stole it. Make sure you don't have a cold thermostat fitted. I learn't that lesson on this clean
cheers..s

I would take a glance through the oil cap and see what your dealing with. If theres a lot sludge be careful if theres varnish use away. Eventhough my engine is spotless under the oil cap im courious if it may clean up the piston rings so its pretty much a guessing game wheather or not the rings are dirty but hey the stuff is pretty cheap so my next change ill try some with Castrol GTX and if i notice any climb in gas milage (mainly) ill do maintence doses with Syntec and stop using Amsoil since i change my oil every six months anyway.

I've used it on six vehicles and the results have all been positive, some much more than others. Obviously some needed it more than others, but the residual effect - eliminating the crud in the ring pack giving better performance is worth it. Especially at four bucks a gallon.

What other product cleans your ring packs while you drive ?
Auto-Rx is an ecological product it can cause no harm. it might do you well to read the FAQ

Do it! IMO, there is no downside. The worst is that you will have is peace of mind knowing that your engine is clean.
MY BMW was mostly clean before two treatments. Afterward, it seemed smoother and had a bit more power. I think the ring packs were cleaned. BTW, the car does not seem to use oil at 4,000-5,000 mile fills with 139,000 miles.

The esters that do the slow methodical cleaning also have great lubricating qualities. There is no down side.

I would only worry if I had an engine that I knew was near death....But chances are, if you'd let your engine get to that point there are actual mechanical issues which arx, of course, makes no claims of fixing. BUT, IIRC, arx even ressurected a Passat from the dead one time. That was an incredible story. Anyone got that link?

The stuff's certainly not harmful in any way and I'm on my 3rd or 4th bottle (2 cleans then running maint doses) in a very persnickety SAAB. I've also started adding it in maint dose form to my 02 CR-V. I can't imagine how it works in an engine that doesn't cause the problems my SAAB's does.

Does "drive it like you stole it" mean to drive it really carefully so you don't get noticed and pulled over by the cops?

or does it mean to drive agressively to keep the engine rpm's varying and engine hot?...and then get pulled over by the cops.

I went from fail to pass on the Calif smog test with Auto-RX. I know how you feel. It's odd to find a product that does exactly what it claims to do. You will probably won't see it in your mechanic's offerings because they need to get you in and out with a paid service. This waiting around for it to work is not in their business plan. But the fact remains that Frank's stuff works and slow is sometimes better. If you don't believe me, ask your wife.

I think that drive like you stole means, drive it hard during the cleaning phase to maximize the benefits. ARX works best with maximum oil flow and heat. This senario can be replicated by running highway miles or beating it a bit in around town driving.

I used Auto RX in my 1996 3.8L Ford Windstar....had over 170K miles on it.
The crankcase was already in good shape, but I did notice some cleaning of the slight discoloration that I could see by looking into the oil fill cap.

Where I did notice a change that surprised me was when I added it to the automatic transmission.
I had thought that it was shifting OK.....and have been changing the fluid every 20-25K miles with Mobil 1 ATF (no additives).

I found that the Auto RX improved the shifting of my transmission......even with a synthetic ATF.
I have read that the solenoids can get a build up of dirt, causing less than perfect shifting.....and am guessin that it has to do with the Auto RX product cleaning there....but that is just my guess.
I added the recommended amount, then 1 month before exchanging the ATF, I added the rest of the bottle.

I decided to give Redline D4 Synthetic ATF a try, and have that in there right now.....with no additive of any kind.
It is still performing perfectly.....and I expect that it will continue to do so.

I mention my transmission experience as I would expect a automatic transmission to be more sensitive to a additive than the engine.

In short, use as directed by the directions on their website, and feel confident about it.
