auto rx questions

I have been to the site and have read the directions but have a few questions.

1. Would it be better to run auto rx with clean conventional oil (supertech .88 a quart) and new filter for 1500 miles or would it do the same thing with Mobil 1 10w30 that has been in for 2k and just change the filter than run it for the 1500 miles?

2. My Fiance has an old 97 cavalier with 139k on the ticker. She has gone as long as 9k (because she said she forgot) on oil changes and once her car had so little oil in it, it wouldn't show on the dipstick! I think it consumes about 1/2 quart a month. How effective would auto rx be on this car? Also, could I switch the car to Synthetic oil after the 2nd arx rinse cycle and go to 6month 7k OCI's?

1. I would say either scenario would work. From what I understand of AutoRX its the rinse oil being dino that matters the most.

2. I would say for this car it would be most worthwhile, as far as synthetic afterwards it would depend on what the condition of the car is in after the 2nd rinse cycle is complete. If everything seems ok I dont see why synthetic couldnt be used.

I would use dino for the 1500 mile dose and absolutely for the rinse. ARX seems to works slower with synthetic (but still works as long as you go the full 1,500 miles).

With the money you save, perform a second treatment of ARX per instructions since this car has over 100,000 hard miles.

After that, I would go with a quality dino, unless she has a habit of "forgetting to change the oil

...then Mobil may be the better choice.

I mostly agree with the above.

2. I would do the "over 100k" A-Rx treatment(s) and then monitor consumption and mileage habits of your fiance'/eventual wife. Most OCI is dictated by convenience and has to fall into a reasonable, evenly distributed, annual term (3, 4, 6 months). We are not naturally asynchronus creatures (just look at the limited mileage on many used oil analysis -even with boutique oils). Unless you detect some increase in consumption after a certain "mileage threshold" into the OCI, you can run anything you want ..probably on a 4 or 6 month OCI.

Side note: Since your fiance may be prone to "oh...I forgot" type behaviors ..you may be well served by thoroughly investigating all the rest of the vehicle's maintenance related items. Women are more into environments than the subcomponents that they are composed of. We males must play with them ..they (women) tend to just use them.

We tend to form our behaviors along either positive or negitive reinforcement. We do some things to achieve a given result (bring home flowers

) while we do others to prevent a certain result (bring home flowers

). They don't seem to always develop this perspective on cause and effect with their behaviors in quite the same way.

It's not a big deal, you can stay with the oil in there and just add auto-rx, make sure you run the full 1,500 interval before the rinse phase, Use the dino your talking about with a new filter for the rins phase. Then start the procedure all over again. After the final rinse, take note how much oil she's using, are there any leaks and decide then if going to syn and longer oci will work for you. I did run my first treatment on Valvoline Durablend, but I think it is mostly Group I dino and Group III dino/synthetic. Frank (ARx) said I could do this, but M1 is supposedly mostly PAO with some esters (I think esters are what interferes with ARx the most). I'd call Frank at Auto-Rx in the am and ask about the M1 for first treatment. Maybe OK, but for the price of the ARx I'd want to be sure.

No problem using Synthetic for the first clean phase. I have used synthetic and Auto-Rx in every clean except one. Tall Paul is correct, you probably will get the ultimate results with dino, but as it has been suggested above, clean with the oil in the engine, (change FF first), and run the dino for the rinse.

One more question for you guys.

If I use auto rx to clean out a Jeep with 36,000 miles will the use of a quality syn (German Castrol or M1) keep it clean with 6 month 7k OCI's?

Also, would doing the auto rx rinse phase in the dead of chicago winters not be a good idea? I am thining about doing the cleaning phase now but that would be the rinse would be in the cold. Should I just wait and use my m1 until next spring?

wn1998, I don't remember reading anything limiting the clean or rinse cycles to warm weather, so unless the experts have a different opinion, I don't see a problem doing the clean cycle now. If you read enough posts from this site you'll find a general consensus that using any good quality synthetic will help extend your OCI and keep your eng clean.

Use RX maintenance dose after cleaning. It's seems worth it from what i'm seeing.
