Auto parts cant take used oils because it mixed with water.

I walk with my container to the back wall of Autozone or Advance where there is collection tank. The employess never think anything of it. Also, I have a sealed container so it is just oil but I'm pretty sure the re-refiner makes sure the finished product is oil and the water is gone.

I used to do the same thing. But now I have to give them my name and address. They have to dump it into the tank, not me.

Like so many other things that used to be simple, now they have to make a Federal case out of it.

But you can bet they prefer you buy your new oil there.

Yep. I also used to call first. Lately it hasn't been an issue so I've become lax.

However whenever O'Reilly was full the AutoZone down the street would take it. The ticket is to get ahold of the district manager and explain this. I bet suddenly O'Reilly's tank gets emptied more regularly.

Once I tried to pour at the store in Alamosa, CO. They didn't have a tank and directed me to the AutoZone across the street. I contacted the DM and said look, you didn't even have the capability to accept my waste oil so I went to AutoZone. I also needed about ~$80 worth of stuff (true), so I bought it at AZ (also true).

I fully acknowledge that an ~$80 sale is small potatoes and won't break O'Reilly, but it's the principle of it.

The DM responded promptly and said he was investigating if the store had room for a tank, and I believed him. The last thing you want in retail is tell someone who has already darkened your doorway to go elsewhere.

Oh, and my local TSC had signs up recently saying they'll accept waste oil. Worth a call. I bet it's not on most gearheads' radar

I'm going to have to check that out. Tractor Supply is closer to me than Auto Zone...... Of which there are 2 here now.
Mine had a sign back in the actual oil aisle. And if you call, press for a manager. A 17 year old cashier will have NO idea

UPDATE: just called my store in SW Colo and they confirm they are accepting waste oil. She said come into the front and then they'll have you go to the back

Good to know hello from Crestone

Get a separator funnel from lab supplies. Get a big plastic one that can hold a few liters. It's a vessel that separates immiscible liquids. The more dense liquid settles out at the bottom and can be drained via a convenient stopcock.

I went to Autozone a few weeks a go with a couple of jugs of used oil and ATF. As I entered the store, there was an associate near the entrance to whom I asked if it was okay to bring them in to recycle, he said no problem and took them from me, no questions asked. One of the jugs was a rinsed out milk jug. He also accepted the oil filter which I had previously drained and packaged up alla @TiGeo . ;)

I just use the wife's gravy separator when she's not looking.
