Auto ins just doubled!

Slim profit margins? That's hilarious! Insurance companies have some of the highest profit margins (if not THE highest) of all businesses, and that comes directly from my sister, who is a licensed State Farm Agent...she said their profit margins are between 300 and 400%...
YES!! They're doing quite well in spite of the "disasters." They just push the cost onto the policy holders to maintain their profit levels. When you call into complain they have their canned replies locked and loaded ready to fire off. Using the term RIP OFF is too kind.

I’m an insurance agent as well. I used to work for Progressive. Being an agent doesn’t mean you know anything about profit margin. Being insurance companies, the profit margins can be found publicly on Google with little effort.

I don't have the numbers, but my guess is there are a lotta people running around without insurance. So we are basically subsidizing them. We pay and pay and pay and ....
That's why I said if the states are going to continue mandating insurance, then the gov will need to step in and regulate premiums. People can't be expected to pay whatever ins cos demand to comply with the state law. If overnight, all of the states did away with the mandate, you'd see premiums drastically reduced just as quickly...ins cos are taking advantage of drivers because of the law mandating ins...

This is also false. Insurance companies are highly regulated as-is just like any other financial company. You really need to do your research.

You can do that to literally any large company that exists. If CEOs are paid exorbitantly, they go somewhere that does. That’s just the way it is. Of course you don’t feel bad for them. You just understand it’s a business, and they are essentially selling a commodity. If one insurer was substantially cheaper, everyone would go there instead. Capitalism balances things out.
If no states mandated ins, premiums would drop substantially. Stop acting like ins cos are just doing business, they are taking advantage of drivers because they know the law mandates ins...

I don’t want to derail this thread into politics, so I’ll say we can agree to disagree. All I was attempting to do with my posts was say that insurance is not as bad as most think. It’s a tough business to be in because everyone always complains and wants to save a buck.
It's pretty tough to buy into this notion every time a policy renews at a higher premium...and it does...

That is the point Grampi bought up - these buggers are all sleeping in the same bed. Legislators, insurance , auto companies etc all are in for a killing, If we didn't mandate it then premiums will come down and also result in more injuries for law abiding people. An uninsured motorist is the most dangerous option for most, its a licence to kill.

In Texas, even if the police did show up, they can't do anything. The driver can have no license, insurance, tags, etc. and the police have their hands tied because it's on a private drive. No tickets, no crash report, etc. I suspect it's similar around the country.
Now days they could call ICE...

I also notice a lot of things are not always guaranteed on the insurance pricing.

1) My home and auto being from separate companies are actually significantly cheaper than from the same company. Some just don't want to be in both industries and some were not very good at both.

2) You may find some companies count different things than others and you end up in different risk pool in different companies. I was quoted more expensive most of the time in Gecko than BBB, because Gecko think of many way to make you higher risk than BBB being more lenient.

3) BBB doesn't want to insure my home somehow and their rate was at one point almost double vs the liquid metal company, the difference is so big that the BBB agent even called me to check if it is a typo. On the other hand in one condo the non-conservative insurance company ended up being cheaper than nation narrow because .... they don't count the public area or structural part of the condo being not a construction cost they need to cover and treat it like a single family home....
I'm trying to figure out which companies you're talking about...I get Gecko, but the others, I have no clue what companies you're referring to...

Utah has a system where the Insurance companies notify the state when insurance lapses on a vehicle-then the registration is revoked on that vehicle. Obviously-not a perfect system but it's a start.
I can see Utah drivers driving around with no insurance AND a revoked registration...

To some extent, I agree. However, there are some agents making way too much money, and most of all, some companies buying WAY, WAY, WAY too much advertising. How many "Liberty Mutual" commercials have you see with that stupid Emu? It plays like 50X per day on my TV. How many bowl games has Allstate sponsored? You and I pay for all that TV exposure.
The agents aren't the ones making big bucks, it's the CEOs...

Everyone needs to know insurance is not "an open market". Insurance is mandated to the consumer. Anytime something is mandated, there are abuses because they know you are a captive customer to their industry. Its not like buying furniture or a TV, where you can freely choose to buy or not. Its a law.
100% correct!

Insurance is cheap for those with good credit history, no accidents or claims AND shop around yearly for better prices.
Everyone has in addition to their credit score an insurance score.

My whole life my rates have been dirt cheap compared to some of the things that I read in here. So cheap it’s stupid and I carry high limits on all types of liability.
If people don’t shop around then it is their own fault. I can see in California issues, especially with the recent fires.

Then again we live here on the East Coast🥰
Even my coastal insurance is stupid cheap, it’s so cheap. I won’t even tell my neighbors what I pay because I’m afraid everybody will go to the same company. LOL I’m quite sure that I pay at least 50% less than most people in my community.
It could be a first year teaser rate with a new company, but even if it goes up from there, it cannot be that much, however, if it ever did, then I just switch again.

People should check with five different companies before they go in forums and complain🙃
This certainly isn't true for everyone. There are plenty of people in this thread with perfect driving records, zero claims, etc. that still have astronomically high premiums, and they continue to go up...insurance is a legal ripoff because mandated insurance laws give them the power to be this...

It may be regulated, but I don't think that has anything to do with premium increases...there seems to be NO regulation on that...
Regulated, LOL. As i mentioned when mine went up 26% in a year, I barked, loud. Then shopped around to no avail, in fact two local brokers couldn't come close to what The Hartford is charging me. The term regulated is bull.... Regulated allowing a 26% increase? Give me a break, especially when my Social Security went up a nonsensical 2.5% with the "cost of living." I guess they don't count insurance in the COL. How about insurance follows the cost of living increases? Insurance companies are in business to make a profit, people should never lose sight of that. To me good regulation would be twice the cost of living as a maximum limit. Rant off. It's never going to happen, too much money is being made.
