Other than the Stealership, where can you get this ATF? Whats the spec??

This is ONLY if your's specs the Esso 71141 ATF, which MOST VW/Audis use.

Isn't that the same AW box that Ford/Mazda/Toyota.....uses?

If so, just pick a quality synthetic or blend HFM fluid.

ZF boxes do require ESSO ATF, but this year Porsch and VW/Audi have switched to Aisin automatic transmissions. Since Aisin is 28% owned by Toyota, these may be similar to Camry automatics and require the same fluid.

Hint: look at the "country of origin" content new-vehicle sticker that came with your car. My 2001 Passat says 99% Germany, whereas the 2006 "new Passats" say something like 72% Germany, 28% Japan. Your 2005 Beetle probably has a ZF box, but I'll bet next year's come with Aisin.

$14.37/L. The $9/L fluid will work, but it is not the factory approved fluid.

Stick with the OEM stuff from the dealer or the above link. It may cost more, but it's the best out there for the trans in the long run. I plan on changing my 04 Jetta's trans fluid/filter at 30,000 and when I do it will get a OEM filter and OEM fluid.

Edit-can I ask why you are wanting to change the fluid out on a 05?

I don't think that the OEM fluid is the best. It might have the 'label' but the spec is nothing extravagant.

Use a quality synthetic like Amsoil/Redline..... or a multivehicle ATF.

Pretty much you're right. I researched the Esso LT71141 and spoke with ZF regarding it. Prior to the newer trannies they were using basically Dex III. The only thing that's really special about 71141 is the addition of Long Life additives.

I've found many Dex IIIs to have similar fluid properties and have used Mobil 1 Synth ATF with no problems for 10k on my 2000 Passat Tiptronic right up until i sold it. Several others are using the M1 as well.

However, I would stick with OE and change every 25-30k if you want to keep your warranty. The Alsin-supplied traverse units are a bit weak. Wouldn't want them to crack open the tranny if it fails and see red instead of yellow fluid . ..

I've been using amsoil universal in my 4 speed vw, but its not a tip.

Mobil 3309 ATF is recommended for VW/Audi G-052-025-A2 which is aisin.

Is the transmission a DSG? I was under the impression that the 6-speed tips were. This box might need a bit different fluid.

DSG is not on the beetle.

DSG requires a diff fluid and a 35k fluid change interval.

There is a traverse mounted 6 speed tiptronic also found on the new PQ46 Passat.

I beg to differ. There are quite a number of NB DSG TDIs running around. Even some of them with rocketchip programing :-X A quick check on the VW site clearly lists the DSG as being the auto/tip in the NB TDI. If it's a gasser, that's a different story.

Yes but aren't the redesigned beetles with DSG, 2006 models? IIRC 2005 were the older non-facelifted model.

I guess the other question is: why is a guy driving a beetle?

They may have even been available in 04(with the PD TDI), but that's just a guess. I wish my TDI had a DSG!
