atf for 1990 volvo 74

Hello all, I'm fixing to swap all the fluids in the old 740 I bought. The girl is a little long in the tooth and the PO couldn't tell me what kind of oil he had in it. Which makes me think it would be a good idea to swap all of the fluids.

With that said the owners manual requires Dexron-IId. I bought max life dex/merc as it covers dex 2 and 3. I just need a gut check here. I'm sure anything will be better than what is in her. Will this work in this car? The manual also mentioned type-f. But from what I understand dex/merc has friction modifiers and type-f doesn't. Is this correct and which is better for my old volvo? I think the automatic transmission uses Dexron, and the manual transmission uses Type F.

Is your car an automatic or stick?
 
I forgot to mention it is a automatic. So am I too with the dex/merc or do I need the dex 6? Thanks everyone.
 
I used DexronIII/Mercon in my old Volvo 7xx's years ago.

FYI Maxlife Dex/Merc is thinner than regular Valvoline Dex/Merc, and may be thinner than the original DexronII.

I don't know if this matters but I was surprised to find this out the last time I bought Maxlife Dex/Merc for another application.
 
Dexron is for automatic trans, ATF type F/G is for manual trans.

In automatic trans you can put Dexron III, even when your manual says IIE: This is the volvo oil recommandation:

A high quality oil designed for automatic transmissions in
passenger cars where ATF type Dexron IIE or IID is applicable,
BW35, BW55, AW7X, AW50-42LE and GM4T65EV/GT. The
oil is also recommended for power steering systems and
carburetors.
Volvo's ATF oil is highly resistant to oxidation and has
good lubrication performance at low temperatures giving
transmissions a long service life.
