I want to change the ATF in my girlfriends 04 Chevy Tahoe.

I seem to remember that it uses Dexron V. Went to A-Zone and had them look it up. The puter says Dex VI.

Reading the back of the bottles......DexV and DexVI will replace DexII and DexIII but the DexII and DexIII wont replace the DexV or DexVI.

I personally wont own a car with an AT so I'm out of the ATF loop. I bought the DexVI but is this the correct fluid?

I just want the correct fluid. No Amsoil or Mobil-1. Just the Warren made stuff is fine but which one?

That would be a DEX-III transmission, wouldn't it?

DEX-III is now an 'outdated' spec, having been replaced by DEX-VI, but if you want simple/cheap, just grab some DEX-III.

I've never heard of Dexron V. Maybe you meant MERCON V?

Either way, the factory fill for that was Dexron III, and Dexron VI is the current specification for that fluid. You can use that fluid in place of Dexron III, but not the other way around. Just like you can put ATF+4 in a Chrysler calling for ATF+3, but not the other way around. Just like you can put DW-1 in a Honda calling for Z-1, but not the other way around.

The bottles say. "Dexron/Mercon-V". Last time I owned an AT it used type-F.

DexVI is the latest and greatest Dex (not cheap). Just go to Wal-Mart and get the Maxlife ATF...it's about $14 a gallon.

DEX VI will trump previous fluid, IE even if your chevy calls for DEX V Dex VI can be used as well. If you want to save money go with DEX V but for a better fluid use the DEX VI

The trans originally called for Dex III, so you can obviously use that. Dex VI supersedes Dex III, so you can use that too. Either one will work fine.

Just a suggestion....since they no longer make Dex III and you don't want to use Mobil 1, many posters have been buying Valvoline MaxLife Dexron/Mercon to use. Dex III is now obsolete and if you want to use the current ATF at the lowest price Walmart has Dex VI in the SuperTech brand.

Search the ATF section of the board to see that they have been using the MaxLife and if they are happy with the product.

IMO....You can get a great deal on it by buying it at Advance Auto, using one of the discount codes, and picking it up at the local Advance Auto.

I purchased Mobil 1 from Advance Auto, using the discount codes for the ATF, got each quart for about $5.25. I also purchased Mobil 1, synthetic gear lube, using the discount codes and got a great deal.

Just my opinions....look up to find what you want to use in your transmission.

Only way I have found is to take the battery cable off.

If it's your daylight running lights...try pushing your dome light button several times until they shut off.

From Amsoil Don't know what engine you have? So I just put in the 5.3 Litre.
Good info for capacities etc.

Tried that, tried setting the parking brake etc... Nothing works. GM didn't have drive in movies in mind when they built this truck.

Anyway back to the ATF. I took the upper trans cooler line off the Radiator, put a hose on the line, aimed it at a bucket and had GF start the truck.

Suddenly I had ATF everywhere! After shutting the truck off I determined that on this truck the ATF pumps from the bottom of the cooler and out the top!

It's plummed opposite of every other car I have worked on.

So after disconnecting the lower line and putting a hose on it I had her start it and pumped 3 qts out. So I put 3qts in the dipstick hole and repeated it.

Did this 3x. I'm hoping that I got most of the old fluid out.

Reason #43456784 that I only drive stick shifts.
