Welcome to the Dark Side ToyotaNSaturn
Muuuuhahhaha.

Check out the Debian Bundle. It is all freeware.
You can download the two .iso files using BitTorrent.
they are like 3GB apiece.

I found Ubuntu easier to get working on my computers. It's based on Debian so had the advantages of Debian and is easier to get working.

Ubuntu did better job of recognizing my hardware. The Ubuntu community seems more helpful too.

Of course, Ubuntu wouldn't exist without Debian since it is based on Debian.

I have Ubuntu running in a VM. How do I start the Samba service? I'm all thumbs using a Debian distro...

How do I even check to see if the package is installed? /etc/samba and the normal config files are in that directory...

I havent Sambaed in years... That sounds like a personal problem

Try this:

I guess I'll wait and see and take my chances, but, I can't see Microsoft releasing an operating system with a lot of problems. Maybe that's why it takes so long before they release one.

Windows ME was a true abortion. Even Microsoft will admit that to you. (Well, at least our MS reps do)

My installation of Gold ME was on my hard drive for about 6 hours. Both Crimson Skies and Links (both MICROSOFT games) would not run. Went back to 98SE until XP came out.

Funny thing about ME is that 95, 98, 98SE, ME are all the same code base. If it's all the same code base, why did it run so poorly?

Oh wait, it's all made by Microsoft...
LOL

Windoze 3.x and 9x/ME were more like viruses than operating systems.

Win2K is the first viable operating system out of Mickey.

1) Hard drive space is not a problem - on my desktop Macs, I've got 500GB and 1TB.
2) Mac OS X IS UNIX.
3) You can run LINUX on there as well.

I do all of the above, and LINUX is NOT a "desktop" OS in the sense that you can't put it on people's desktops at work and have them do their jobs in most circumstances.

LINUX is great for what it is, but a consumer/corporate OS it is not.

Scott, I believed that until I saw SLED 10. Very easy to use. VERY. I was amazed at HOW easy it was to fire up simple applications and "hit the ground running". Ubuntu comes close.

Just installed 2 more SLED 10 servers the last 24 hours.

"2) Mac OS X IS UNIX."

ScottB - I did not know that. Thanks for poining that out to me.

When did Apple go Unix? Was it with MacOS X?
Maybe now Mac can gain market share.

Linux is geared more for Scientific/Engineering. It has such a wealth of valuable app support it is almost scary. And most all apps are free. It would cost 10s of thousands of dollars to purchase add-ons for Windoze for what Debian bundles free of charge. GNU is Great !!! [Insert Penguin here]

Lex, yes, it was 5 years ago with OS X. BSD.

And yes, Apple is gaining market share - especially since they went to Intel chips.
I run Windows XP on both "Boot Camp" where you're actually booted up as a "real" PC and in Parallels which lets you run Windows or Linux side-by-side with OSX.

The Mac today is a TRULY different beast than five years ago and with the Intel chips - it's hard to imagine buying anything else - unless budget is the deciding factor - Apple doesn't make a $150 laptop

Shows how much I consider a Mac. I know they went to Intel chips though.

Well...Ummm... Ballmer...Ummm... Does have a good...Ummm... point. There is some...Ummm... "infringement"... A bit..well... A little more than a bit... But less than a lot...Ummm.
