Ended up with a free Lian Li case a while back and I've finally gotten around to putting parts in it. Nothing exotic or cutting edge, but the old Mac Pro is showing its age with gaming, so I'm just going to KVM between the two of them and start transitioning to the new system slowly. Shopping a gen (AM4 vs AM5) behind made the build pretty cheap.

Parts list:
- Lian Li LANCOOL II MESH C case
- ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming WiFi II full ATX motherboard (AM4)
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT AM4 CPU
- 64GB Kingston Fury Beast DDR4 RAM (will likely bump up to 128GB later)
- Sapphire Pulse AMD RX 7600 OC 8GB GPU
- ASUS ROG STRIX 850W PSU
- WD Black SN7100 1TB SSD (+ 2TB for storage)

Still waffling on OS choice between Windows 11 Pro and Nobara Linux (thanks to former member RodKnock for this one), which basically has a port of SteamDeck so you can play all your Windows Steam games on it without Microsoft's constant spying.

Will post some pics on Monday when the rest of the parts show up. It's nothing special, but should work well for what I plan on using it for.

I loved building my own PCs the times I did it. But since Fry's closed my quick drives to pick up the little parts I forgot about are no more. Plus I like to physically some of the parts that I am buying instead of ordering online and hoping.

Nice. Very sensible build.

I'm running EndeavourOS currently. Haven't tried Nobara yet. Nobara is very popular with the gaming crowd. Also developed by a guy that works or use to work for Red Hat. About the only issue people have is getting their Nvidia cards running correctly under Linux. Good on you for you going AMD.

Lian Li makes great cases.

They used to be very boutique....but I built one for a friend's sister with a LL O11 (I think), I wanted to throw that thing out the window on the highway. I don't remember now what angered me about it, other than to swear no LL cases anymore. Their old brushed aluminum cases were beautiful though. Fractal Design takes the cake for gorgeous cases imo now.

5800XT AM4 vs. 7700X AM5 which are comparable CPU's there is about a $200 difference. Add in the price difference for the motherboard and it's about a $250 difference. In the 3-5 years if you want to uprade, you can get a new motherboard and CPU and put that $250 towards the upgrade.

What's the use case? I've used a few systems with 32GB and it's pretty difficult to use it all up unless you've got a specific use case that eats RAM.
32gb isn’t hard to use up in windows 11 with a few programs open and chrome running lol.

Is 11 that much worse than 10? Currently, I'm running Win10Pro. Playing Doom 2016, Firefox open with dozens of tabs, Chrome open with dozens of tabs, plus various other programs running, and I'm only using 18GB.

Looks good. A 850 W power supply is way overkill. And 64 GB of memory is also. Neither will hurt anything, though.
I have 64GB currently in my old Mac Pro, 15.2GB currently in use in Windows 11 with just a couple browsers and Outlook running. 64GB was cheap, so I don't see a reason to go with any less than that.

The 850W PSU I had in stock as a spare, so it ended up just being a convenient use.

finally just built a new one aswell, interested in why you sided with AM4, AM5 has pledged support for a while.
Price. Saved several hundred on the board and CPU. Since I'm coming from a 2010 Mac Pro, I expect a pretty long service life. We'll be well past AM5 by the time I do my next upgrade.

The AM5 equivalent of this motherboard is about $200 more for example, and the CPU was $140 off.

The more RAM installed, the more Windows will use. More available for caching and such, so it uses it. I know you know that, just saying for others that may be reading along.

Reason enough! When I bought my parts about 15 months ago, I remember there being a pretty big price premium going from 32 to 64. And as you can see a few posts up, I have a really hard time using more than 20GB even when I go out of my way to try.

I did a little research on your system and it is nearly identical in performance to mine. You just win the RAM contest. LOL.

i5-12600KF
RTX 2080 8GB
32GB DDR5
Samsung 980Pro 1TB

I built mine Christmas 2023. It plays every game well at 1080p. A little adjustment to settings is sometimes needed on the newest titles, but any titles more than a few years old will run at 144fps fixed on maxed out settings. You'll enjoy it. :)

Agreed. Lian Li used to be incredible. Now they’re still decent, but I find them overly complex.

I am now a big fan of the Antec Flux and Asus Prime.

Yeah 64 gb has benefits these days for sure, depending on what you run and how much multitasking you do.
