Are these coilovers done for?

So, this happened after I increased the preload on my coilovers a bit.. not sure why or how this would happen as I only lifted the truck 0.5"

As you can see, the top hat seems as if it's cross threaded. It drives fine as far as I can tell, had a mechanic take a quick look at it and he said one big bump and I'm done for, but just wanted a second opinion to see if these can at least be rebuilt.

That looks more like it isn't threaded on at all and just sitting on the top of the shock body.

It needs to come out for inspection bare minimum. I'd be prepared to replace that shock. The aluminum body is probably damaged at this point.

When you adjusted them, did you loosen the collar and spin it? Seems like you might have been spinning the entire shock body when you did your adjustment and instead of moving the collar you spun the shock out of the top hat.

First thing I thought of too. looks like it was turned until it popped off.. not even cross threaded.

Yeah I loosened the set screw in the collar, before turning it with the spanner wrench, it was not too hard to turn either but I had a 1/2 breaker bar.. Come to think of it, it might be possible... I did this in the dark..
