Are there a lot of Rich BITOGers?

I think you could run into quite a few people who have a net worth of a couple million bucks. Chances are that they seem like "regular" people.
Chances are that if they only have a couple mil, they made it themselves, which generally means they weren't always rich (assuming you consider that to be rich).
50+mil is a different story.

3 things that I want and need in my life more than being a millionaire…..

The saying is, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” It’s ancient. A couple millennia, in fact.

A much more nuanced and sophisticated saying than just “money is the root of all evil”.

Love of money is a problem. It replaces more important things in life. It becomes an end instead of a means.

Money itself is a simple tool. It can be wielded wisely, or stupidly.

Jealousy was also cautioned against, while we’re on the subject of things that are bad for you. Jealousy clouds your judgment, makes you feel bad when you shouldn’t, and leads to division and pettiness.

Gratitude, thankfulness, appreciation for what you have and what you’ve been given is a far better approach than being jealous of people’s wealth.
Well said. Money isn’t evil unto itself. And anyone who thinks that isn’t giving enough of it away. Buy food for a shelter. Take toys to sick children. Leave an outrageous tip to a single mom busting her butt waitressing. Do good for others with it, help people, make a difference in others lives. There is no evil there.

when i was a young man having a million dollars you were considered rich. now these days i consider one wealthy when they have a 50 million. in my area all you need is a paid off house and you are or close to a millionaire. i know people with 10 -50 rental properties that are jsut everyday people.

i would say people that frequent this board tend to be more savvy and frugal with their money.

So how many of these do we really have on BITOG

If you own a paid off home in much of California, you have a couple of newer, paid off cars, and have about 40 years of IRA and 401k contributions by both a husband and a wife, it's not hard to be worth a couple million dollars.

And I doubt those examples would consider themselves rich. More like comfortable and enjoying the fact that they were responsible financially and quite a bit lucky too.

My mother used to tell me that people who have money don't need to talk about it and people who don't have money don't want to talk about it. It's usually for these reasons that discussions of how much money a person has don't usually have much substance.

There are about 210M adults in the United States, with about 22M adults with net worth of $1M or more, according to recent studies.
Net worth being defined as what you own minus what you owe.
The number of millionaires has grown rapidly in the last 1.5 years, due to the stock market and home price increases.
For the first time, a little more than 1% of the adults in the U.S. are worth at least $1 million.
Now if you are talking about people with $1M in savings, stock portfolios, etc. (excluding home) that is far less.

The wealth of the average adult in the U.S. has grown to a record high of $80K.
Importantly, "average" wealth is a deceptive number. About $5 trillion is now in the hands of just 745 American billionaires, compared with about $3 trillion that is shared among the bottom half of American households.

Finally, measuring wealth is kinda like weather reports. The weather in your area is more appropriate to you than the entire US.

It's all relative - I have relatives (rim shot) that get million dollar bonuses every year and I do not. I think I'm pretty well-off but to them they probably think I'm poor.

I’m not sure mansions, or private jets, are a sign of wealth.

They’re a sign of spending.

But Buicks?

You would be surprised at what actual millionaires drive…

Well I drive Hyundais and Kia‘s (but they’re paid off and reliable) Live in a quaint little house no garage no six bedrooms. I would not want it any other way to be honest with you. There’s food on the table heat and hot water work ect i’m very happy where I’m at, at this point in my life. I remember one day when I was very young and first on my own not even having a cash for a Ramen soup. So I’m very appreciative now on how far I’ve come In my life and I am glad I went through that time. So I can appreciate everything that I have today.
