Are extended drains really protecting the engine?

Application is key. Driving habits, climate, commute, etc, all play a factor in the life of an oil. There is no one perfect routine. Find the one that fits best and stick with it.

The OLM in my Buick usually starts blinking after approx. 6K (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less). About 30% of my miles are in NYC...and often in stop and go traffic. Recently I installed a full PAO synthetic and the OLM went off at 5800 miles. I was disappointed that I had to drain it at such a low mileage.


Then you're really not doing 6k in engine usage. The fuel you're processing would probably run a car on the highway to some much higher mileage reading.

How many gallons of fuel did you use during that time. How far would that have taken you on the highway?
