Copy and paste or Attach file to email a resume? If I attach a file will they open it if they don't know me.

Problem with copy and paste is my formatting gets screwed up.
Seems to get screwed up with IE7 or Firefox.

Write a plain text file...edit as you require..copy and paste that.
No, it won't look as nice (they know that).
Also, esp if it's a large company...they parse the text looking for various keywords that help them whittle down the pile.

I would have to assume that if you attached the file and noted in the subject and body of the email who you are and what you've attached, then there'd be no problems with the receiving party opening the attachment.

NOTE: There was a thread here not too terribly long ago where someone asked what type of file he should use to attach his resume. I said that using a .pdf was a no brainer due to 1) it's cross platform ubiquity, 2) it's ability to embed images and fonts to preserve the design and layout and 3) it's ability to disallow the receiving party to edit the file. Someone later posted, however, that they had information form someone reputable that a Word file was best... But what version of Word?! I dunno. I'd still use a .pdf.

It'd also NEVER hurt to include, *in the message body itself*, a plain text copy of the resume.

EDIT: Heck, you know a lot of people post resumes online, too.

Attach your resume, your email/cover letter should make them want to open the attachment (don't make it long winded though). The reason for attaching it is so that they have a soft copy to distribute and put into their system so that even if you don't get the job you're applying for they'll usually put you in their system so recruiters can look you up from their system as other positions open within the organization

Many HR staffs run keyword search to pick out some resume over the others to their boss.

That's why we got a bunch of Indians who don't know squat applying when the HR toss out a lot of good candidates that we referred to them.
