Apple announces digital driver license/state IDs with 8 states

Neat - I do like Apple Pay and have noticed it being offered at more and more locations. Gas pumps are a more recent addition to the Apple Pay universe. Since iPhones won't let someone pay with Apple Pay unless they match the FaceID/fingerprint on older phones, it's likely safer than carrying around a wallet full of cards that can be used by anyone who finds them, and I'd assume the same to be true for IDs.

It’s very handy. I have all my credit cards, store cards, insurance cards etc already on my iPhone. The drivers license is a natural addition.

A drivers license is a thin card you don't even feel in your pocket or wallet. A smart phone barely fits in your pocket and is bulky and uncomfortable if it does.

I’ll add it, but I can’t imagine using it very often. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’d consider it just a backup.

On a related note, ApplePay on an AppleWatch is possibly the best thing ever for easy, fast, secure payments. Double-click a button on your watch and you’re done.

They don’t have the information. It’s stored locally on your iPhone.
You can’t be that naive, right? Have you heard the latest controversy about Apple and it’s plan to scan images on its cloud based services? Granted for a good reason, but that is still one step closer to them seeing everything on your phone.

I can imagine someone getting pulled over and being nervous and all. The officer asks for your drivers licence and instead of the 3 seconds it takes to get it out of your wallet, you reach for your phone and try to frantically figure out how to access it for next 5 minutes with the cop staring at you. Hope the battery doesn't die on you.

It is entirely possible to have a digital drivers license on your phone and a physical drivers license in your wallet. They are not mutually exclusive.

Apple Pay is not free, and it has a few glaring issues on the processing side that many merchants aren't fond of, like using the same virtual account number for multiple customers. Apple takes a cut for each transaction they process through Apple Pay. As absolutely nothing is free with Apple, I wonder who ends up footing the bill for this service.

As much as I dislike apple, that apple card that changes the number everytime it's used so nobody gets a hold of the number is a really cool feature.

It’ll be free to the user, but will require an iPhone. The process is to scan the physical DL/ID and then it’s saved to the Wallet app (was previously Passbook). I don’t know exactly who pays for it, but I’ve never paid extra for anything in my Apple Wallet, including airline boarding passes, train tickets, hotel reservations, etc. I assume the hotel/airline/whatever paid afee for this access, but I’m good with it.

Aside from the huge privacy violations and concerns, I can't wait to see when someone manages to crack Apple's cloud servers again and gain access to this wealth of personal info.

All credit card companies take their cut too. Nothing new there. As for using the same virtual account number, my understanding is that a random token number is sent which securely used to verify the user.

The only thing I have noticed that is not free to the user is the Cash function. Apple has a cash back program that accumulates like many cards do these days. If you decide to transfer the cash back to yourself Apple has two choices, a instant payment that charges a fee or a 2-3 day payment that is free.
