API SF Engine oil ?! why

Hi,

Went to the dealer to get the oil changed yesterday and found that they are using a Caltex Havoline oil with API SF in small can for filling up. Lucky I brought along my own oil. Out of my ignorance, could some one tell me any reason why they still use oil with such obsolete API qualities? And also why a big guy like Caltex still produce SF oil?

From what I can gather here, anything lower than SJ would not do good for car engine.

what car, what year? My camry allows SJ even though it has been superseeded by two spec levels (SL and SM)

Are you sure they weren't using the old Caltex Havoline can as a measuring container?

A lot of shops here have one bulk hose for the entire shop, so techs would use old oil containers to transport the oil to the car that they were servicing.

That's what I was thinking. Over here, the bulk oil is supplied in drums and the techs use old oil containers to measure and pour the oil into the crankcase.

At least they're using old oil containers - at the Walmart I used to work at, we used old windsheild washer fluid containers to measure out 5W-20 engine oil from a drum before we got the bulk tanks changed around to have 5W-20 and 5w30 in them, not 5w30 and 10w30.
