Wife has an 07 Murano on lease, going back in about a year and a half. Been using Valvoline SynPower in it without complaints. I had a thought of trying some 5w20, but know this engine likes a little thicker oil. So, my question is, has anyone used a 20 in this engine with success?

Thanks!

I've never tried it and doubt a 5W-20 is the best oil for a VQ but hey, it's a lease. Let us know what happens

See..my thing is not to abuse the vehicle. Obviously, I've treated it well with Valvoline 5w30 every 4k. I'll continue to, though I think I'll be moving to PP soon.

Just wondering why are you considering 5w20 for an engine that the MFG specs a 5W30 for? Is it to save gas? I can see going to a 0W30 in the winter or maybe a 10W30 in the summer (assuming big temp differences in your area)...but at operating temps, I would be sticking with the 30 weight.

Also, in my neck of the woods 5w30 is available in just about every brand and quality while 5w20 is more scarce...so wouldn't you be limiting your options somewhat?

Nissan VG`s prefer thicker oils, not sure about the VQ`s. There`s some good Nissan/Infiniti chat forums on the net. Join one and do some reading. Lots of valuable info on them.

Many 30 grade oils thin into the 20 grade anyway so you have probably been using this grade much of the time. All 20 grades I have seen are near 30 grade and hold grade well. If you are not towing at high speeds and up large grades or driving over 120 MPH for extended periods then a 20 grade or even a 10 grade may be useful for a lot of things.

If your driving is mostly steady US highway or/and city use then the 20 grade will almost certainly result in less wear of your engine. Other benefits are a small increase in MPG and more pep.

These may help you understand viscosity, the first one is more complete:
