Rant time. You know, Walmart receives a lot of grief here (and among members of the general public) for their business practices. Canadian Tire can be worse.

When Walmart has an advertised rollback on oil, they almost always bring in a huge amount of it, and often have two pallets right on the floor, along with a full display. They do, sometimes, cheat a little bit with quantity when it's M1.

When Canadian Tire has a sale, unless it's GTX, if it's a really good sale, you're not going to get a drop unless you're there right at opening the first day of the sale. The last time they had PYB on sale, I was there a day after the sale began, and there wasn't a bit of 5w30 left, and only a couple of 10w-30. With the current PP sale, there is nothing left except empty shelf space. Their raincheck procedure is a huge hassle, even when they offer it.

When it comes to regular prices on oil (both synthetic and convention), Walmart and Canadian Tire truly suck. Their individual quart prices are particularly appalling.

A couple hardware stores here and a truck stop in Saskatoon beat both Walmart and Canadian Tire by $8 on the five litre jugs. RCWC sells the Mobil Super 1000 by the litre at around half that of Walmart and CT. Five individual litre bottles of Mobil Super 1000 regularly priced wind up being about $8 cheaper than one five litre bottle of any conventional at either WM or CT. Their Mobil 1 regular price is about $10-$14 cheaper than the regular price of WM or CT.

Trying to get an oil special from CT has caused nothing but frustration for me lately. I have had better luck at their sister store, Partsource. Their specials last for a month, so you don't have everyone there first thing Friday morning to clean out every drop of on sale oil.

If I were ever to go back to synthetic, CT is about the last place I'd be buying it. It's also the last place I buy conventional, too. Same goes for filters - they can stuff their overpriced Wall o' Fram. And it's pretty bad when I can get a bottle of Red Line SI-1 from an independent shop for $5 cheaper than I can get Regane from CT.

I didn't know getting a rain check from CTC was a hassle , don't recall it being so ?
I do agree with what you are saying and I have had it happen to me . I will say there was 2 jugs left when I took those 8 so I'm betting I was lucky to get it when I did . And yes , their pricing does suck .

Thanks for the PP vs Amsoil info , I'll check into that .

Well, it could be incompetent staff here, too. One never knows. In any event, I don't appreciate having to go to a store twice for one purchase. Like I said, Walmart puts PYB, for instance, on rollback and has two pallets plus a full shelf. Canadian Tire does it, they fill the shelves once with about 16 jugs and that's the end of it.

As for Amsoil, just an observation on price - if you have a Peavey Mart out there, their Amsoil price is actually competitive with the regular mainline synthetic prices at Canadian Tire.

I have an Amsoil preferred customer account I got free on a promotion that's good till the late summer . I know I'll be getting a case of ATF as I do drain and fills on both cars with it(trannys and PS) . Likely get some motor oil and a few other things too .

No Peavey marts in ON that I know of , you folks in SK have some different stores as they do in Edmonton when I was out to see my son I was looking .

The only connection I have to SK is my quarter horse Tex , he's from Kennedy SK and full of attitude

They mainly cater to farmers, gardeners, and the like. Their display of Amsoil is fairly impressive, and fully half of it is two-stroke Amsoil, thanks to the number of customers who use need it for their power equipment. They were out of my oil filters, too, which isn't surprising considering how many pieces of power equipment specify the same filter that the G37 uses.

If one wants Formula Shell, Peavey Mart is about the first place to look. If one wants synthetic there, though, Amsoil is about the only choice.

Last week they had M1 on sale, in the special 4.4L jug with the 1L bottle taped to it. I showed up there at 5pm on the first day of the sale and the shelf was already sold out of 5w30! But I asked one of the parts counter guys if there was any more out back and he brought me out another one.

So in most cases they probably do run completely out but it doesn't hurt to ask just in case.

FWIW, I've had this issue with Canadian Tire for many different on sale items (not even oil related) over the years, which is why I always go there on the very first day of the sale (and even then sometimes they are sold out already). I'm gonna head over there tomorrow to buy a Hamilton Beach juicer since it's on sale for 50% off! Wish me luck!

I've had good luck getting tools on special there. However, I have a lot of tools, and I usually wind up buying something fairly obscure. The last thing I got was a micrometer, and I'm looking at the stud finder now in their flyer. The cable tie looks pretty handy, too. That creeper is calling to me, too, since mine is only about five years younger than I am, and it's seen better days. Peavey Mart has some nicer ones this week on special, anyhow.

As for sockets, which Canadian Tire always has in abundance, I have too many already. I only buy singles when it's some absurd size that I either don't have or simply can't find.

With respect to Canadian Tire's oil specials, I just throw my hands up. Between Walmart and CT, anyone who pays much over $14 for a jug of GTX is a sucker. Both always have that on special. It wasn't so bad even two years ago, though. The Canadian Tire on my end of the city would have a special, and one could amble in at one's leisure and get the oil. The Canadian Tire North was always a problem for oil specials, since its surrounded by automotive shops and people who do a lot of DIY work. I remember a PYB 1L bottle special a couple years ago. The east one's display wasn't touched. The north one's on the same day was bare - nothing from 5w-20 to 20w-50 left in the yellow bottles.

The west side Walmart is similar. While the Walmarts aren't bad for ordering oil, as I already mentioned, the west one seems to go above and beyond and orders Olympic sized swimming pools of everything on special, and it languishes on special for months after the official end of sale.

On a related note, there is a reasonable (but not great) special at Partsource, and Walmart's doing good this week. I posted them here.

I got to my local CT last night at 5pm and the shelves were empty of the juicer that was on sale! Had to ask an associate if there were any more, and they had 4 of them left, but it took her 10 minutes to go get it! It's crazy how bad they are at restocking sale items, most people see the empty shelf and leave the store disappointed.

I don't know what they're doing in your neck of the woods, but unlike Walmart, there's simply no floor space for a pallet or two of oil. They'll have some Castrol GTX on various endspaces, but that's it. Heck, even Partsource has room in the aisle parallel to the counter for extra oil on special and the like. Canadian Tire fills their corresponding areas with their little on sale gadgets and tools.

I've stocked shelves in retail in the past. If I let it get that bad, I'd have been hunting for another job.
