Anyone seen an NGDV (Next Gen Delivery Vehicle) yet?

Haven't yet seen one delivering the mail, but my regular mail carrier says he should get his designated van very soon. He says it should be an all electric variant, but doesn't know if it'll be 2WD or AWD. Both large Post Offices here in town have made major renovations and that includes several charging stations in the back parking lots. Being built in nearby Spartanburg, I have seen a few on trailers being delivered, but none in action. They look rather cartoonish, kinda like smaller versions of the Rivian Amazon vans that are starting to show up around here more often. My carrier is looking forward to having a lot more room, especially since he will be able to stand up in the back and sort/haul bigger packages. Now, he has to head back to the P.O. a couple times because there isn't room in his Grumman and does a lot of sorting behind it through an open rear while standing in the street. That, and it will have air-conditioning. I'll miss the rattle and squeaky brakes that let me know my mail has arrived though.

It appears to be the perfect vehicle
for local rout deliveries. Tall, with big front window and low weight distribution. I’m interested to learn their mpg.

Words cannot describe how much windshield this thing has.

Saw one at a traffic light, the turn signal dimmed slightly as it started moving. Seems to have shared electrics with the start-stop system or electric drive. Gives me "one LED and one incandescent hazard light flashing" vibes.

The make-up of ICE to BEV was supposed to be 90/10% around 2021 when it was finalized and Oshkosh got the contract. The ICE is a Ford 2.0l Ecoboost with start/stop and a target MPG of between 8 and15 depending on if the A/C was used. Initial deliveries were started in 2024 and by that time the BEV content went up to around 20% of the first batch of 50,000. The chassis is designed so that at anytime during production, the ICE version could be switched to BEV since both share many parts overall. Lots of back and forth about increasing the number of BEVs, which centered around cost obviously. Funding from the Inflation Reduction Act (oxymoron 😁 ) funded an additional several billions of $$$ to increase the make-up closer to 10/90% ICE/BEV. Now, deliveries through 2028 are currently settled on 45,0000 BEVs of the initial batch of 66,000 NGDVs (of which almost 10,000 are going to be Ford E-Transit vans). The USPS made the proposal for replacement in January of 2015 to be 180,000 units. We all know at what speed the USPS moves, so we'll see what delivers the mail. Someday.

from what I’ve heard from neighboring districts is the new ngdv are garbage…so many electrical and drier assist problems. the ecoboost can’t power the truck enough to get out of its own way. we haven’t seen one yet, though, and we’re the biggest district in the area I believe. we do have 2 e-transits rotting away in our back lot as we don’t have charging stations for them, but ours were intended for maintenance use (vehicle or building maintenance, I’m not sure which).

I've seen one or two about, guess they haven't got many in the city
My letter carrier recently got upgraded to a Metris, he enjoys the (much earned) Heat/AC

Goofy proportions, but designed for a job 🤷‍♂️

Hopefully they're more reliable than the aging LLV
I swear one Christmas year, 3 different LLVs broke down on my block, one right in front of my house
Had to jump it and fiddle with the battery terminals to get it going again 🙄

Not here yet. They were running the old S10 based trucks, just recently switched over to the Mercedes based vans. Amazon is starting to run their electric vans, tho.

Around here tons of EVs for delivery. Amazon Rivian vans, FedEx has (sadly now discontinued BrightDrops), the occasional E-Transit.

But I look forward to seeing the new post office vehicles. Well I don’t look forward to seeing them because they’re ugly, but I look forward to them happening. Because it’s the perfect application for an EV, it will save taxpayers money long term, and it delivers comfort and safety for the drivers that the old vehicles don’t.
