A friend has a 1999 Ford F 150 with the 4.2L V-6 (137,000 miles) that he uses for carrying his work tools. He lives in a area of Southern California where the temps are mild...lows around 40, but occasionally does work in the mountains where temps can get into the 20's 50/50 freeway and city driving.

He was given a case of 5W-40 and was wondering if he could use it with no problems? I believe the 4.2 like most Fords was backed spec 'd to 5W-20 from 5w30. I told him I thought it would be OK..but would check with the experts.

Thanks in advance.

I ran the M1 10-30 in my old 99 F150 4.2 with no problems here in Illinois. You should be OK.

5W-40 will work well in that engine - larger Ford V-6's seems to run a bit better on thicker oils.
